Hello, all. I am trying to learn about Asian art and would like to start collecting on a small scale. Is it possible to start with items of moderate price to learn, say under $100? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Gary
Some Chinese export categories can go this low. I have a Jaiqing export bowl that I got for 50 dollars, but add shipping and I got Peter to verify it, so close to a hundred all in.
Not all of them go this low, but I think this area is somewhat neglected by the market right now.
Hi Gary,
It depends on what you're interested in. By art, do you mean painting & sculpture? Or would a porcelain plate do? You can find nice examples of Canton, for example, that would be over 100 years old and perfectly good, perfectly authentic. Here is a Canton style cup and saucer, 19th c.
"Kitchen ware" is also pretty reasonable.
It takes time; be patient and don't be too afraid of mistakes. Those can be very valuable and educational.
Happy hunting!
-Steve
@gm2037 Welcome, Gary!
Is it possible to start collecting on a budget of $100? Absolutely! First off, as long as your approaching this as a hobby, and not a business, you can take as long as you need to feel comfortable to make your first purchases. So, let me suggest you take photos of anything you are thinking to buy, then post the photos here...wait for a few responses on authenticity, age, and possible value, then make your decision.
Nobody here is working against you - if you score big right out of the gate, we'll all be here to celebrate your successes. And, if you fall on your face, well.... there might be few teasing remarks, but all in good fun and learning.
I started about 12 years ago on a budget of $50...not buying anything above $10. I was not a member of this forum back then, and I was interested in making some money as I collected, so I put my purchases up for sale on Ebay (auction). If an auction went well, I knew I bought right, and if not, I bought wrong. Along the way, I read articles, visited museums, but best of all, I met knowledgable people willing to share their experience and tips on how to buy...that's what this forum has to offer.
Best of luck - we're all anxious to see what you dig up while you hunt down your first Asian treasures!
Tim
If you are interested in Japanese art, Kutani porcelain is not expensive compared to much of the rest of the Asian Art market. eBay offers many pages of Kutani, but it is a challenge to find pieces of interest, depending on your tastes of course. Most of the listings are from the Meiji era, so definitely authentic antiques. I collect Kutani, and I have spent many hours perusing those pages on eBay. Also if you check Live Auctioneers for Kutani, there are usually a few pages of pieces. Peter did a very detailed video on Kutani a few months ago, particularly about a stunning vase that he bought many years ago, but he also covers Kutani ware in general on that episode. You can find it on his YouTube site.
I’d like to add that pieces of Rose Medallion, which is also a Chinese export porcelain, often sell for fairly low prices. Good Rose Medallion is also from the 19th Century, so a true antique. During the early 20th Century and beyond, the quality really dropped as mass production began in earnest. Good 19th Century Rose Mandarin and Rose Canton tend to be pricier, although you never know, and if you are willing to accept pieces with hairlines, rim frits or other minor damage you can sometimes make very good deals. I got an absolutely beautiful and rare Daoguang Rose Mandarin plate for about $135 on eBay a year or so ago.
All the best of luck to you Gary!
In case you’re interested in Ming or older. Lots of items under $100 and guaranteed authentic
Birgit
If you live in or near a city with a sizable population (even better a city with lots of elderly retirees) there will be lots of estate sales that will provide fertile hunting grounds for Chinese antiques.
I recently bought this 18th century cream pitcher for $81 dollars at such a sale.
@william I bought a similar pitcher for $10 at an estate sale a couple summer's back.
My 2 pennies worth, Gary, is to remember to look out for the extra costs. If you buy at an auction you may get hit with more than 30% fees and there may be high shipping charges on top.
Always check the postage. Ebay isn't costly to actually buy, but some sellers charge high p&p - possibly to protect themselves against a poor auction result. I nearly bid on something, yesterday, but just stopped in time when I saw the postage was a massive £83 to France for an average sized plate!
Well, I have some authentic things I would sell you for under $100 so post an email address if you are interested and I will reach out. I'm sure others on here would oblige as well. John
By the way, Gary, yesterday I perused bidamountlive.com, Peter’s site where people buy and sell Asian Antiques, and I found a number of items for around $100 or less - some very old bowls, one or two apparently from the Ming Dynasty. Sure, they’re not the most exquisite or perfect but to have something from that era can be an a good foundation for part your collection, especially if, as you say, you want to learn. The items I spotted are on the last few pages of the inventory.
