I’m on the fence about camping out for another sale after just coming home - I must be getting old.
But, thus porcelain plaque looks very interesting.
I know it’s a blurry photo, but any thoughts on the artist?
Looks like a decent Republic period piece…. House sold $2.3 million, so it is rather full of other good things, too, but mostly interested in the plaque.
Plaques by the 'eight friends of zushan' are highly desirable and copied.
Birds were the favorite depictions by Cheng Yiting (1895-1948), Liu Yuchen (1904-1969) and Bi Botao (1885-1961). All except the last one were prolific artists. Any of these would be worth camping out if genuine works. And would I submit command prices well in excess of $10,000. So would be worth a night out in the rough.
If it's a copy then it's worth in the vicinity of about $300++. Depending on how well it's been depicted.
But the only drawback is the one partially blurred image. It's impossible for anyone to make a logical and informed decision.
The only one thing is the frame. It looks rather modern. Which in itself is meaningless as it could have been reframed etc etc.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Thanks!
There are some other interesting pieces in the sale… just trying to come up with an effective argument for when to my wife we’re heading out of town again.
Ugh. Not sure I’m gonna succeed.
I’m not an expert for these plaques but it makes me think of something I read here in the forum. If the painting is from a master your eyes are guided around in it. I have a painting from a contemporary Chinese artist on my wall that is done that way. I enjoy it each time I pass it. On the plaque you show my eyes are immediately drawn away from the birds down to the lower left corner and out of the picture.
Birgit
@shinigami Good point! Why would the artist want us to look into the void? Then it's likely a repro based on what we can see, but of course we don't know what is happening in the rest of the picture we can't see, so perhaps it all works with more revealed? Only Tim will know... after he sleeps in a van down by the river again. John

🤣 🤣
I’ve got the green light! I’ll be on my way tomorrow afternoon!
@bartholin Thank you!
The trick to scoring these pieces is to be first in line, and to be first in line you often have to figure out the address of the sale before they release it. I'm happy to report...I already figured out the address, so before anyone even knows the address of the sale, I'll be in line!
@shinigami You are correct, it is a principle taught in art design class regarding balance and making the viewer's eye travel around the canvas. Of course as soon as there is a general rule, there will be artists to break the rules. Also, I'm not sure if western design principles always apply to eastern design, imbalance may be balance in Zen, but in general, what makes a painting pleasant to a viewer's eye, is to make the eye travel around the picture, or at least that is what you are taught in design class.
Since this discussion has evolved into art composition, I am curious what you all think of this one I recently obtained? Do others feel it has that circular energy that is being mentioned? John
@johnshoe Yes, it does balance, the objects do not have to be the same size, just something there to move the eye around the painting. It does not even have to be an object, sometimes just a slash of paint. There was a modern German painting titled Lamentation at the Houston Museum of Fine Art that I loved to look at that drew your eye in a circle, it was not equally painted on both sides, but was still balanced successfully to draw your eye around the painting.
I just looked it up, Georg Baselitz, German 1983 (1983, no wonder I liked it).
It might also be fun to start betting on whether Tim's adventures will yield treasures or duds. We could create a fun game of it. Maybe it could lead to creating a board game where you move a little dude in a van around the board.
