I think I've shared this before, but I always dust it off and show it off around Halloween....my birthday month, and my granddaughter's birthday month - Trick or Treat!
If people dress up on Halloween as ghosts, skeletons, and witches, do ghost, skeletons, and witches dress up as people?

@steve Thank you - Yes, it's Meiji era satsuma/kutani... it's one of a kind, and a bit hard to classify.
I bought out much of the contents of this estate in Coral Gables FL... just full of nice Japanese and Chinese antiques. The prior owner purchased items from the World Fairs back in the late 19th c. and into the mid 20th c.
This was one of the pieces I kept for myself. I've brought it to a few antique shows, but the offers on it have never quite met my own valuation of the piece.
@sharonp There’s a second dog walking, not nearly as cute as the begging dog.
I really don’t study it as much as I should. It depicts a precession of some sort. There’s a husband and wife carrying a child, people carrying lanterns… some seemingly everyday activities.
However, one skeleton is weeping, while others seem to be carrying gifts like bonsai and ichiban.
It’s only about 6-7” tall. I had thought to use it one day for my funerary ashes, but it’s just too small.
It’s rather delicately potted, too, so it’s really just purely decorative- not functional as far as vases go.
@greeno107 What a vase! Could that have been made for the Mexican market, day of the dead, etc? Perhaps it was given as a diplomatic gift. Is it marked?
@johnshoe I think the procession is probably a traditional Japanese celebratory event, but I haven't identified which one. So, I'm hesitant to suggest it was made for the Mexican market (not sure what market would have existed in the late 19th/early 20th c. It was likely a World's Fair piece.

Some time ago, I had posted this little vase to Asianart.com , and Martin Mitchel (I think that's Mark's friend) responded with some detail regarding the mark....
"The mark reads: Dai Nippon 大日本 Yokohama 横浜 Kawamoto 川本 Zo Kore 造之 (Great Japan Yokohama Kawamoto made this).
So not Kawato 川戸.
I think this is a mark of Kawamoto Kengo, who lived in Yokohama and made Kutani-like ware. He was an exhibitor on the St. Louis (Missouri) World Fair in 1904.
I've added another mark of Kawamoto / Yokohama, as you can see it's different from yours.
Another possibility is, that this mark is by Kawamoto Hansuke / Kawamoto Masukichi, but they made Seto ware.
