Dear Julia,
You highlighted a number of pieces of Charlotte's that were being auctioned by Michaan’s a few weeks ago. I was surprised, and fortunate, to win Lot 2496, which included the small vase from Brian Page and a nice Korean bowl. You mentioned you might have more information on some of these lots. If so, would you mind sharing your knowledge? I would very much appreciate it.
I am hoping to receive the shipment tomorrow. Meanwhile, I am attaching a couple of photos from the auction house.
Many thanks,
Carol
Oh I am so pleased someone on here bought this lot! It was one of my favourites and quite a bargain.
First of all, here is a similar vase from Brian Page Antiques.
Details of a couple of the other pieces are on my computer, so I will post about them a bit later. 😊
@julia Thank you so much, Julia! I will look forward to hearing more.
And yes, I thought it was a good price, too, although shipping costs make it a bit less so. Still, I am very happy to have won it and will be waiting impatiently for it to arrive tomorrow.
Carol
The darker of the two bowls is Korean, but I know no more than that. I would estimate maybe 13th to 15th c but I really am unsure.
The other bowl could be a Southern song fujian bowl from Ceramics and collectibles in Holland (the Shangrila guys as Peter calls them) but I would need to see the base to check it matches with the photo I have.
The smaller bowl was from Bidamount, described sas a 15th / 16th c south east asian bowl. It had this sticker on the side, but whether that is genuine provenance I don't know.
Hope that helps, post a photo of the other base if you can when they arrive. Congratulations, it was a good lot.
@julia Thank you again, Julia. Yes, I can see Jan-Erik Nilsson sticker on the littlest bowl; I had missed that. Here is the only photo of the bases of the pieces as sent by Michaan's; I don't know if it's enough for you to tell if it's the Shangrila bowl or not. If not, I will send a better picture in the next day or two.
I really appreciate all your help,
Carol
Yes, that's the base.
Obviously, these descriptions are from the sellers, but 3 of them are well known and you can always ask JE Nilsson about the bowl with the sticker. 😊
You're welcome. 😊 I hope you like them. Please let us know what he says.
@craig Thank you, Craig. The shipment arrived a bit late, so I haven't unpacked it yet. When I do, I'll post a better picture. Looking forward to your translation.
Carol
Here are some more pictures of the little bowl. I think I can see the cyclical date yi chou, but that is the extent of my attempt at reading Chinese. I have no idea of when it might have been written, except that it looks earlier than 1985. But 1925, 1865, or?
As you can see, the only really unusual thing about this piece is the extensive calligraphy on the bottom. I would love to know when and why it was done. Thanks for your translation expertise, Craig!
Carol
Thanks Carol, such a nice piece! The piece itself is great, but I agree the calligraphy is what makes it extra special.
You're correct about the cyclical date. I'm still scratching my head over the first character, and then the second to last.
The first I think might refer to the reigning emperor, but it doesn't use the typical two-character convention.
It may take me a few days to dig them out, but I have some old notes that should help narrow it down. I'll let you know what I find.
