I think this is the second bowl dated to 18th c. from the big auction houses. Brian posted one a while back from a Japanese collection. Interesting sale price.
I just realized this is Brian's. Here's the one from the previous sale: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/china-5000-years/a-gilt-decorated-blue-and-white-bowl-caixiutang
I remember this bowl. Lol
Congrats, Brian!!!
@lotusblack Also, it was a great example of being persistent and thorough on your part, and a reminder that not all experts agree all the time, which is a good thing to remember and consider when we are making decisions about the things we collect and deal.
@johnshoe I owe a lot of the persistence to Stuart, Xin and Mark and Hannah had it not been for their experience resources and passion I believe the bowl would have been a victim of opinion and lost for good. Now I believe it’s in the right place. Tim taught me about art being in the right place. This group is teaching me every day how to become more of a hunter. Who knows what art will get found next here. At least I know the bowl was worth more than the $10 dollar appraisal. Lol
@lotusblack Yeah, I remember your original post. You were wondering why so much work would have gone into creating something you figured was just a reproduction. You thought the thread was going to be to discuss the sinister nature of reproductions. Pretty funny in hindsight! And now you're laughing all the way to the bank. Well played and great teamwork by the all-star forum!
@johnshoe I never told anyone when I found the bowl I actually put it back on the shelf and left the store. I was trained that if it didn’t look old it was not real. I didn’t know that the good stuff don’t look old at all. (Sometime) Now I know. I was sitting in my van when I said well it’s only $3 bucks Brian. When I went back in the store another person was looking right at it. But past so another rule I learned do put stuff down if it’s under $10 bucks.
Brian, that is fantastic! Really pleased for you!
Thanks for posting that, Xin.

We, the members of this Forum, really need to revisit this kind of thinking and make clear that 'looking old' doesn't necessarily mean scratched, chipped, cracked, and dirty.
I'm glad you didn't loose it....good thiing I wasn't at that Goodwill!
😯 Wow, Well done Brian. Any chance someone might link the old thread.
@short-dong I requested the link removed when Sotheby’s got involved so it wouldn’t negatively affect the process.
I wanted to share a little of my experience with Sotheby’s also. I have heard a few members state that sometimes big auction houses miss things due to inexperienced or new authenticators. I have a different view. My experience was everyone was involved in the authentication process at Sotheby’s. New York and Hong Kong a committee than looks at it again everything is researched and they have scientific equipment on top of the experts. No one person authenticates the item and off to the auction it takes months from start to finish. So when you see it sell for more it’s because it took a lot of man power. So in short if Sotheby’s excepts it let it go they don’t except much trust me. Lol
