Do chips or cracks hurt asian antiques? Some are really high with damaged areas.
Damage has a big impact on value in Asian antiques. Still, some items are able to bring good prices even with some damage or restoration if they are sought after pieces, but it is nowhere near what they bring when they are in great condition.
@originalbidamountkid not sure what you mean by strange looking or weird. As far as being most in demand, the top of that list is usually mark and period and imperial items.
That's a good question, Angela. Probably every collector will have his or her own answers to it. I personally try to avoid buying anything with chips and hairlines if it's Qing or later. On Kangxi export porcelain some rim fritting can be expected because that was the technical standard of the days. On older items I accept a few chips because many of these have been buried or are from shipwrecks. But I always try to buy the best condition I can afford. On the other hand I have no problem with firing flaws or other damages that happened during production.

This teapot looks PROC. Though I like the form I would skip it because of the probably printed decoration. Weird and unique pieces are often modern fancy productions.

@originalbidamountkid Who are Cohen and Cohen? Sounds like a law firm, but they need to add a new partner named Hale. Cohen, Cohen and Hale screams victory. Now days, what with shipping containers arrivivg from China every day full of "priceless antiques," to ports South, it brings to mind that famous firm, Dewey, Cheatum and Howell. P.S. I found them, they are the shop in the United Kingdom? Do they have auctions or strictly retail?
I subscribe to the Antiques Trade Gazette and there are some astonishing prices paid for pieces with the right provenance and skill evidenced in the pieces despite what looks to be considerable damage or repair. It's also a really good read but doesn't focus on asian works.

I can only add that, sometimes, damage can occasionally provide collectors with an opportunity to acquire an object that would normally be far beyond there financial resources …
Restoration costs, if to be incurred, also need to be factored in …
It is a very individual point of view but, personally, damage has never bothered me …
