That's lovely - and great photos, very helpful!
Dear Michael,
what a strange bowl. I am not doubting it, Brian Page Antiques is by far one of the most reliable sellers on ebay. I have never seen a suspicious item on sale by them.
I am only saying that the bowl is very strange, I have never seen that foot/paste on a Wanli bowl.
I would like to hear Stuart about this.
It is a shipwreck item, judging by the degradation of the glaze.
Regards
Giovanni
Yes it is a shipwreck item. I have seen this model and shape in a lot of Christie's items.
Regards
Michael
Dear Michael,
I said that I am not doubting the bowl. I am just finding unusual that brown base, which during Ming I have seen on jars and, for example, on big Longquan censers, but never on b&w bowls, if I am not wrong. For this reason I am interested in hearing Stuart, who has a big experience on Ming ware.
Giovanni
Me too, I hope to hear from Stuart on this bowl and hope i have a authentic MING -Wanli bowl, i believe it was from the Binh Thuan shipwreck.
Michael
Hello Michael
Could it be a 15th century Ming bowl? I have a 15th century one that has a very similar unglazed foot on the inside.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Michael and Giovanni -
No issues with this piece, definitely Ming and probably made around 1600.
Such pieces were produced in large numbers, exclusive in the Southern Chinese kilns for export to South East Asia and Japan, and used to be called 'Swatow' wares, after the southern port of Shantou, Guangdong or Swatow in the Dutch records. Recent excavations of kilns in Zhangzhou, Fujian provance, and other sites in Guangdong provance, show such pieces were produced in the kilns of Zhangzhou, mostly in Pinghe County.
These wares were made in a limited number of shapes, mostly large dishes, but also bowls, jars, jarlets and small plates, and differ in almost every respect from contemporary porcelain made in Jingdezhen. The paste is unrefined, the cobalt grayish in tone, the glaze thick and usually crackled, the footrings and bases - usually unglazed - are poorly finished and adhered with sand/grit, which is typically of these wares, the pieces been placed on sand in the kiln during firing.
These wares are decorated in blue and white, polychrome enamelles and, less common, monochromes with slip decoration.
Stuart
Dear Jeremy -
This bowl is certainly not 15th century - the painting style, motifs, body, glaze and finished all indicate a dating to around 1600.
Stuart
Dear Stuart, stupid me!
You are right, Swatow; I did not consider that. I was only focused on the common, typical Wanli blue and white ware made in Jingdezheng.
Thank you
Regards
Giovanni
Hello Stuart
I hadn't considered the design, mine is a Tianshun mingyao bowl with a flared rim.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Dear Giovanni -
Not stupid at all!!
These wares are a specialist subject in there own right, and can vary in quality quite considerably, with the monochromes with slip decoration pieces usually the best. In overall terms however, they are far inferior to the Jingdezhen wares ...
Stuart
Dear Jeremy -
I have a particular interest in pieces from the Zhengtong, Jingtai, and Tianshun periods, both Imperial and minyao wares.
Perhaps you could post some images of your bowl for further discussion ...?!
Stuart
Thank you Stuart ! I forgot to mention "Swatow" but you did it for me.
This forum is a treasure, as always. I will make my next purchases, for my young and new collection, just from Brian Page Antiques.
Good prices, authentic pieces, very cheap and fair shipping.
Regards
Michael
Hello All,
Thought I would add my recent purchase from Brian Page during their summer sale. A 15th/16th. C. covered pot from Vietnam. These little covered pots are not rare nor I suspect very desirable by collectors of Asian ceramic's however to my mind to be able to buy something from the time of Columbus and before Shakespeare had put pen to paper for around $120 is a bit of a wonder.
Michael
Beautiful piece and as you say, very old, same reasoning for my buy.
Regards
Michael
