Peter mentioned local stores in his video before. What about sharing some good stores in our own area in this thread, so we may visit in the future if happen to travel there?
Hi Yi Zhang,
This is a helpful topic, thank you.
I live in the Bay Area and there are a few antique stores that we like (not as many as there used to be, of course). The ones we frequent the most include:
-Antiques Colony on W San Carlos in San Jose. A large consignment store with dozens of vendors, near a clutch of other antique stores.
-Antiques Unlimited on El Camino Real in San Carlos (my favorite). Also a large consignment store with several vendors.
-Von Hemert Antiques on Ashby Ave, Berkeley. Small, junky but with a few treasures. Not sure how much longer they'll be open. It's the place where I bought my first Qianlong porcelain!
-2nd hand shopping in Menlo Park is fun; you never know what you might come across. There is Afterwards (they also carry women's clothes) on El Camino Real and a couple others around the corner on Santa Cruz ave, plus Feldman's used books.
-In Fremont there are a string of antique and second hand stores in the picturesque Niles neighborhood. Most are pretty junky there are a couple that are pretty good. The older stuff tends to be just Victorian, though. You can also visit their film history museum as there was a small studio there, one of the first in California. Charlie Chaplain made a couple of pictures there including Gold Rush.
Happy hunting!
Steve
@steve thank you! I’m going to Bay Area Monday. I’ll will try to find time to check out one of these.
Hi Yi,
There is a great charity shop (Yellow Brick Road) in Carmel about 100 miles south of SF. I have found good Chinese antique porcelain and rare books there in the past. If you are nearby check it out.
George
Also, largest antique mall on the California Coast in Monterey about 100 miles south of SF. You will find a lot to see there for sure.
George
@gfhandel I did go to these places today. They are not far from each other. The yellow brick road is a well organized cute store, and the cannery row store is huge. Their location is also great, for Monterey is always an enjoyable place to visit.
Hi Yi, Great that you went to both places I recommended. Used to go to both quite often when living in Monterey prior to moving to San Mateo following my stroke.
The Monterey area had many good Asian antiques available. I once found a beautiful Ming blue and white plate for $15 at Yellow Brick Road and rare books and Japanese dolls as well. What a great shop.
The Cannery Row Mall is huge on two levels. I found many Qing porcelains and Foo Dogs there as well as Art Deco items to add to my other collections. We used to go nearby there quite often for coffee at the Plaza Hotel.
What a great location. Hope you had a wonderful drive down the coast.
George
11 inch Ming plate that I purchased in 2018 at Yellow Brick Road Carmel Charity shop. A good buy at $15

@steve Hi Steve, as a Bay Area native who has remained here, i thank you so much for this list! Although i don't get out much, it will remain in my purse for those days when i do! Do you have any recommendations in the North Bay, Marin County in particular?
Thank you so much in advance, Charlotte
@gfhandel Hi George, first of all, thank you so much for these recommendations! Also, as I live in Marin County, I'd like to ask if you have any recommendations for the North Bay?
By the way, i love your Ming plate, and would have thought it a great deal at $15 or $150!! Good going.
@charlotte You're very welcome, Charlotte.
The stores I included are in my stomping ground and I don't make it to the North Bay very much, I'm afraid.
Happy hunting!
Steve
Does anyone have any recommendations for NYC? Thanks!
