I'll also add that I was lazy with citations and have devolved to memory on my comments on the rigging. I've read through so many that I'm now doubting which book I've read that discusses Chinese decorating of rigging. I'll go through this week and try to find the exact quote and supplement it here when I find it.

@bartholin I figured you'd like it. That one from Christies you linked is actually the other example I was referring to. For now it is being kept in the family, but if a decision is made to sell it down the road I will give you and others here a heads up. It's in fantastic structural condition - no chips or hairlines. The only thing it doesn't have going for it is the blue banding around the top which has almost entirely come off. The Christies example also had some issues with that blue band chipping off, so I imagine they could be from the same batch given all the similarities of style and condition.  John

@johnshoe I am so excited that you've decided to collect it! It's a piece that would be a beautiful jumpstart to any China trade collection. I love that you shared this here. I still think about your export flower boat pith paintings that you shared previously. You have a great eye, and what seems to be a beautiful China trade collection from what I've seen so far. 😀 I hope you'll share more with us!

In my mind, your mug dates to c. 1795. The overglaze blue enamel of this time period was very difficult I think... One of my humble saucers, but obviously later that yours, really shows how variable the blue enamel border can turn out. Its the one on the right and you can see it's very rough in texture and has bubbled over, seemingly "overcooked".

AmericanShipBlue 6

In contrast, this armorial (which I've yet to share since I'm working on the write up), shows how the blue enamel might've been very thick to work with. I've put an arrow where it shows where the paintbrush was applied and picked up. It would've been applied on the wheel and rotated when it was applied, but you can also see where parts have chipped off.

Here are two similar ships in quality to your mug. The first is in the Reeves Collection book, and the second is from Elinor Gordon, one of the greatest Chinese export porcelain dealers. Gordon placed it in the Order of the Cincinnati section, rather than the Ship section, so I wonder what the thought process was there.

This is an example of one of the ship documents, a bill of lading, with a ship engraving/design that would've served as a source for these pieces:

This is an interesting article generally on ship designs:

This is an interesting article specifically on American ship designs. It's also fun for me personally because my cider jug is illustrated in the last page.

I see it's difficult to see what I mean on the overglaze blue enamel with those photos. I retook them here:

@johnshoe Sorry to ping again. I just remembered a dealer has one of these that I inquired about 6 months ago. You might like it to add to your references: https://www.santoslondon.com/products/chinese-export-porcelain-mug-decorated-in-opaque-enamels-with-the-american-flag-on-a-man-of-war

Impressive research! Well done.

The folly in the foreground is another clue that it is not English. It immediately struck me as being Asian in style and nothing like a folly in the neo-classical style.

@nicdan Thank you very much, Nic, and also for the folly observation! I have wondered what the feature was called since it is detached from the main house, so it is interesting that it is also in the Chinese style 😊 How interesting!

@bartholin I have a couple more great armorial pieces I want to show you, I just have to unpack them as they were just moved. I'll see if I can get to them tonight. Stay tuned!

@bartholin These are my favorite armorial pieces, not because of monetary value, but because of the human values that the man who had the service made possessed. I won't spoil your researching fun by telling you anything else about it. Go have your adventure and then tell us all what you discover. I have a feeling you will find more to add to the story that I have already uncovered, so I look forward to hearing what you come up with. Cheers! John

@johnshoe I see you've caught on to how much fun I have flipping through my books and learning more about these pieces 🤣 🤣

They're really nice! The border decoration is classified as "Later Diaper, Trellis, and Scale" in CAP 2, and the arms are of James Maitland, the 8th Earl of Lauderdale. There are four different services made for other Maitlands, and yours is a part of the last service made for a Maitland. Rather than reiterate some of what you've seen on the 8th Earl, I'll leave a few links for others interested in reading of him 😀 He seems like quite an interesting politician who wasn't afraid to speak his mind! Seems we share a joy in the history behind these pieces!

One of my favorite things about Chinese porcelain ordered for the West is the small hints of a Chinese hand (as you can see from my en grisaille plate). You can see a form of it here as well! The crest on yours is a crouching man, but the correct crest should be a lion sejant (sitting upright). Additionally, the arms on yours is a lion rampant (standing on one hind leg with forefeet in the air), but should be a lion dechaussée (similar pose but limbs cut and separated from the body). Lastly, the motto's last word, correctly as animis, is misspelled as animus. I find these mistakes to be an interesting layer that highlights the difficulties Chinese decorators faced when being sent these orders. Howard muses in his write-up for the service that the source design sent to China must have been extremely small, possibly a signet ring or seal, that would explain these errors in heraldry. The supporters are correct, and they are eagles. The crown above the arms is an earl's coronet (evidence this was made for an earl).

For reference on terms:

Heraldry Terms

The correct heraldry:

My original 18th c. engraving came in today, so it was fun to take a photo of these two together:

273635267 1316646945488109 184984899781132560 n

It's interesting that the house has very similar dimensions, almost exact. Maybe the artist started with the house!

Still looking for the citation on the rigging. I may have read one quote in the negative that claims that the accuracy of the rigging betrays a Western hand, implying that Chinese painters are less accurate with rigging, but I'll keep looking.
