Hi,
I have been looking at some auction pieces that I am considering bidding on. I feel confident about what some are but am going to need your kind help, please, (again!) with others.
Before I post up individual items, I'd like to ask a couple of questions. The first is the use of Chengua marks. I see these often on doucai items (usually reproductions) but did a 4 character mark get used in the 19th c like the 4 character Kangxi mark was?
Here is a photo - with an ikea pencil:
Second question: does anyone know what this mark says, please?
Last one is about 4 clawed dragons - I believe they were non-imperial? So does that mean they are less likely to be copied? There are two items with 4 claws at this auction so they caught my eye as mostly I see 5 clawed ones (unless it is a Japanese item). This is one of them.
Later on, I will try to work out which items I need most help with and put up some threads. I don't want to hog the boards or overburden people! Apologies, too, my photos are poor - it was very hard to get the phone to work with gloves on (everyone was asked to wear them - actually, I was pretty much the only person there).
Thanks for your help.
Julia
Regarding the 6 character mark, there is a further plate with the second character within double circles on the base.
Hi,
The mark I believe is “A gem among precious vessels of rare Jade” Davidson 289.
I have a few 4 toed Dragon pieces, one of which is termed a bald tailed Dragon according to a Chinese site.
Regards
Vic
Thanks for the translation, Vic. I am certain I have seen it on here before, but I couldn't remember what it was.
I will look up "bald-tailed dragon" it sounds interesting.
Julia
Hi Julia -
Although very rare, Imperial pieces from the reigns of Hongwu, Yongle and Xuande decorated with three and four-clawed dragons are known - will try and post examples of such tomorrow ...
Stuart
Thanks, Stuart. There was actually an amazing 3 clawed Yongle dragon in Peter's video.
It led me to thinking that given that dragon's don't exist, I wonder who decided how many claws they should have and why they stopped at 5? Was it because we have 5 fingers and toes?
JUlia
He's a great dragon, Vic. How old is the plate?
I just came across this one with 3 claws. Interestingly there are no scales on the dragon.
Kangxi with Chenghua 6 character mark.
I believe the last piece you show is a Kiu Dragon.
Vic
I remember a Christie's expert in a Youtube Video talking about a ming dragon on a big jar, and she said that the three-clawed dragon is the symbol of a prince and of course the five-clawed dragon the symbol of the emperor
Chris
Hi Julia -
Attached images of Imperial three and four-clawed dragons ...
Stem bowl is Hongwu period, National Palace Museum, Taipei ...
Underglazed red vase also Hongwu, Asian Art Museum, San Francisco ...
Large flask is Yongle period, Gugong, Beijing ...
Reconstructed guan/cover excavated from Yongle strata, Imperial Kiln site, Zhushan, 1994 ...
Large guan, Xuande mark/period, Metropolitan Museum, New York ...
Large flask, Xuande mark/period, Japanese private collection ...
Reconstructed large meiping, H. 54.4 cm, decorated with ‘Chi’ dragon, Xuande mark/period, excavated from Imperial kiln site, Zhushan, 1984 ...
These early Ming examples decorated with such dragons must have been excepted Court designs, perhaps ordered/made before the ‘five-clawed’ type become the standard norm for this Imperial design ...
Enjoy!!🙂...
Stuart
Vic,
Coincidentally, Peter’s new video on the Philadelphia Museum of Art shows a plate with a dragon which has caught the pearl at the 15:30 mark. Peter says an image of the dragon actually holding the pearl is a rare thing.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Thanks Todd, yes they are quite rare,I’ve seen a few similar.
Generally they all seem to have 4 Claws. It is up for sale but I think the World has bigger things on its mind than porcelain and don’t expect any interest.
Stay safe,
Vic
