Sorry for the sudden spam of Japanese pieces; and I must be forthcoming I'm asking this so I can accurately give an answer to a friend who is interested in trading for these in lieu of some Imari pieces he recently acquired from an estate. He loves floral vases and wire enameled cloisonné, so hopefully all goes well..
I said I suspected Showa for both, and on the modern side at that for the wire enameled tray (it's very thick and heavy, but the base/foot immediately makes me think factory made for some reason..) The hand painted fish accented with the gilt are gorgeous I must admit.
A close friend of mine suggested Taishō for the vase, as I got it from a collection of lamps that were mostly first quarter of the 20th century a while back (judging by the hardware that was parted out with it at the time). I know in the 1920s and 30s it was popular to turn older Chinese lamps into vases from what I've read; but I'm usually conservative in my estimations unless I find a very similar example researching; and I struggle with dating Japanese pieces just as much as Chinese ones at times.
The vase does feel handworked as the lip is slightly off center when rotated on a lazy Susan, and the ribbing on the inside piqued my curiosity. It's been quite a few years since I've been back at the pottery wheel myself, so I'm not too confident in distinguishing it with certainty.
(Sorry for the lackluster photos, it's nighttime here and I can't get any of that ol' natural light on the balcony)
Thanks for the help, apologies for the long post, and any insight or commentary is appreciated!
Hope all is well and best regards,
-JRN
Vase^
^tray/footed platter
Hi JRN,
In my opinion based on your pictures I believe the vase would probably date to the Taisho period. The dish/platter is I think later. So showa. A couple of nice pieces imo. We don't really see that much Japanese wares on this site. 😊

@imperialfinegems
Thank you yet again! I went on a bit of a Japanese spree the past few weeks 🤣 should have some cool items (Japanese and Chinese!) arriving throughout the next few days...willingly, as I'm sure we've all been dealing with the delivery delays..
Lovely early Kutani vase should be here in the next few hours, the pictures were blurry so I'll try to post some myself in this thread later today when it arrives!
Until then and best regards,
-JRN
As promised, here's some items that arrived today (and early, what a pleasant surprise)!
^Meiji (or possibly rather late Edo even?) Kutani vase with a very neat 9 character Kanji mark.
And for the Chinese export fans out there..
They are in relatively remarkable shape - especially the Nanking Cargo piece; for having been underwater for a couple of centuries, that is.
I guess Jingdezhen produced quality really does speak for itself and stand the test of time 😆
Will try to treat myself to the hardcover auction catalogue when I can come across a reasonably priced one..
Hope everybody enjoyed looking and is staying well during these turbulent times.
Regards,
-JRN
The vase is very pleasing to the eye.
Would really like to know what the marks on the base translate to, perhaps gfhandle aka George/or others maybe able to assist?

For lovers of Japanese metalwork there is a stunning jardinare coming up for sale via Juliens Auctions located in Beverly Hills CA. Lot # 0006 sale date April 5. Estimate between $600-800.
Lot forms part of the estate of the late Hollywood star Doris Day. Gifted to her by Rock Hudson. Listed as a brass jardinare. It's not brass, it's bronze based on the size of 12" and weight of 20 pounds. Its listed as having an asian Mark.
I suspect that the mark stated could be that of the master Genysiro Seiya Zo. This master was prolific during the late late Meiji period. He specialized in exotic animals/other with life like images similar to the one on offer depicting adjoining elephants. His works are highly collectable today and command decent prices far in excess of the auctioneers estimated price. And it has superb provenance! I have one myself by Genysiro Kin Zo depicting warriors/other. I love it!!!
Well worth asking the auctioneers for further details and pictures. Unfortunately for myself it's not economical to ship from USA to Australia based on the size and especially the weight. However may be a great buy in my opinion for local residents if you can buy it for under $2000 or there abouts. I have seen similar sell for well in excess of $4500. Highly collectable especially given the size.
Sorry I am unable to post pictures as I am currently on a mobile phone.

@gfhandel
Once again, thank you for your assistance. It seemed to match most Meiji Kutani marks on bases, but I must admit the inclusion of the artist's names on Japanese pieces always makes me realize just how much there is to study up on. Much appreciated insight!
@imperialfinegems
Due to the blurry photos when I bought it, I assumed there was a lot more damage/wear to the piece - however upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised just how lovely it looked!
Also many thanks also for the tip on the upcoming lot.. what a fascinating provenance, too.
Coincidentally the start of April is when I've scheduled another "self shopping" session; as it's when my two main listings end.
If they perform as hoped for (always a big "if" with auctions imo haha), I may very well have to consider inquiring more on it/throwing in a few bids.
Seems like a relatively low estimate, hopefully the other prospective buyers aren't as keen on the possibilities surrounding it..
In fact just ordered my first bronze Japanese piece from an auction at a relative bargain due to the same generalized "Asian markings" descriptor. I believe it to be one of the more heavily produced late Meiji or Taishō ones, but for the price it'll serve as a good display piece regardless; will be sure to include pics when it arrives.
As always, the education and aid is extremely gracious of you all, glad to be learning so much on here already.
Regards,
-JRN
@imperialfinegems
Oh goodness, after seeing the picture I'll likely have to hold off on the Chinese Imari pieces for a while 🤣
It looks superb!
Hi JRN,
I would highly recommend you ask the auctioneers for a further pictures of the mark and then post here. If this was brass as described it would not exceed about 10 pounds in weight.
Mark
@imperialfinegems
Mark,
Looks like a few people were keen after all...
Still willing to contact for a picture of the mark should any other members here be interested(?), but I think this puts me back to looking at those Chinese Imari pieces, personally..
May ask for additional photos regardless, what an absolutely stunning piece!
Thank you for sharing - hopefully a member of the forum is amongst those competing for it.
Regards,
-JRN
Hi JRN,
Already at $5000. Wow but given the provenance I guess anything is possible.
Still its a very nice piece. Shall be very interesting to see the final hammer price.
Mark
Hi JRN,
This is the mark on the base of the elephant bronze jardinare.
Perhaps gfhandle aka George others could decipher?
Mark
@imperialfinegems
My apologies as I just now saw this and your update.
Thank you for going out of your way to get access to it! Hopefully the Japanese savvy members here will have some more to go off of now..
I find it odd how the bidding has relatively cooled off (+$1000 increase in around 6 days), as I believe the auction officially starts tomorrow, whereas the price jumped last time we were in this forum discussing it from sub-$500 (if I remember correctly) to the 10x multiple at $5,000 in just a few short hours..
Maybe pre-auction ran its course and the others are waiting for it to officially start before bidding heavy handed?
Will be exciting to see what it ends up for regardless. As you mentioned last time, the provenance alone makes it a fascinating piece...
