Hey folks,

Just got a pair of these little guys, clobbered and damaged, the second one is soaking because the clobbering is mostly peeling.  You can see the blue peeking out from under the enamel, it looks like a nice early Qing blue to me, and so does the foot.  Curious though since I am pretty sure these aren't snuff bottles, why so small?

Neat!  I'm building a 'miniature' collection for my grand-daughter, but I don't think I have any Kangxi pieces.  Post the results after you get the clobbering off.

I've got a nifty little celadon double gourd about this same size. I'll try to remember to post a picture later.

Miniatures were popular in the West and the Chinese paid attention to their Western markets particularly in the 18th century.  Furnishing doll houses certainly goes back to the 18th century.

Now that I think about it, I think I have seen a complete set of doll house furniture made from Zitan that sold at Christie’s.

All of my mini’s are clearly late Qing, except this one… really nice potting, thin white porcelain, and artistic engraved design…. But, not like your little beauty, so perhaps this green egg vase is late Qing, too.

@william

Doll house vases!  Yes! Thank you, I can't believe I couldn't think of that.... haha.  There was a huge quantity of these on the Vung Tau Wreck, but they might have been bigger actually.  Crazy this thing is like 6.3cm, super miniature.  I'll se if I can dig up the catalog I know its here somewhere.

@greeno107

That is such a cool idea for a collection.

I have a feeling its going to be near impossible to remove the clobbering on the other one, but I will try and make it look better, just unfortunately the face of the goofy dragon is part of what peeled off.  If that was intact I'd be trying to save it.  Will update when I either way.

I am not sure about the age of your green one, maybe mid 19th?  The paste looks quite nice so perhaps earlier.  Very pretty color.

Cheers,

Jeremy

@jbeer2121 It will be hard to remove the clobbering if it is fired on.  One thought I had and always wanted to try is to use chemical glass etcher... craft stores usually carry it.  It dissolves glass.

Enamels are essentially glass, so I suspect it should work.  You might have to work out the timing to make sure it doesn't eat past the surface enamel into the original slip, but that might be something you can experiment with on a broken piece... just to get some practice.

Hello Jeremy

Miniature porcelain vases date back as far as the Song dynasty. Below is a tiny vase which was found in Borneo and I have shown a pound coin with it as a size comparison. The even smaller porcelain lychee figure was excavated in Sulawesi. Two very early export miniature pieces.

Kind regards,

Song or Yuan miniature vases found in Sulawesi. The smallest is 1,8 cm high but all are perfectly hollow.

@jeremy @shinigami

Thanks for both examples of miniature vases, really cool the teeny tiny ones, I really never thought about anything smaller than a jarlet before now.  You both have me beat for the world's smallest, that's insane!

I think I need to start a collection of these.

Cheers,

Jeremy

@johnshoe

Hey John,

That's a cute vase, plus such a nice shade of celadon.

I bet it would look lovely with a large white flower in it, first thing I thought when I saw it... now I can't unsee it.
