Hey Folks,
So I bought this last night, in a lot with a Korean vase. It looks familiar, and though they said this was Chinese, I think it is either Shiro-type Satsuma or possibly Korean. Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone seen something like this?
The photos are from the auction and a bit washed out, I think it is a bit more creamy in color, from the more shaded photos, I will certainly photograph it when I get it, but at the moment it is bugging me, as I am fairly certain I remember seeing something just like it before, just cannot remember where.
Cheers,
Jeremy
That looks interesting. It sits on quite a wide base, maybe that is a clue to the origin or period.
Julia,
That was one of the reasons I was thinking Shiro satsuma, and they did have quite a strong Korean influence at the time, as the neck and mouth look rather Korean to me. There is very limited information on the earlier white ware satsuma though, and I am not sure yet if it is a stoneware or a porcelain either, but it looks more like stoneware to me.
It just looked interesting and appears to have some age, plus was rather affordable.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Here is one Shiro satsuma bottle, note the thick flat foot:
@jbeer2121 That base and foot seem very similar to the comp you posted and it seems likely to be earthenware, so you might be right on with the Shiro possibility. I had never even heard of it before this thread, so thanks for the education. Another rabbit hole to climb down this evening when I get home!
Ditto, I like it, has the file marks that Peter talks about occasionally, where they had to even the foot so it would sit evenly.
Yes, it is similar isn't it. I have not come across this before either, so I will also be doing some learning!
I have not really seen it other than a few pieces at the Freer Sackler, and those tend to be more a yellow/cream white glaze, but also with a fine crackle. I agree the foot seems to be very similar, and I think Korean feet tend not to look quite like that. I have found little info on the earlier white Satsuma wares, but here is an interesting article.
I quite like the molded dragons on this vase, and the squat form, but totally don't remember what piece I remember seeing that this made me think of.

@jbeer2121 Thank you Jeremy, I enjoyed reading very much, especially since I did not find much on my own, except that I agree with you that the foot does not look like the Korean examples. Interesting about the Korean potters in Japan teaching the techniques, oh that butterfly! The earlier plain cup had beauty too.
Sharon,
That cup is stunning, and gosh I love the butterfly, I'll take one of each please!
Here are a reference page and an interesting site I found on Korean influences in Japanese ceramics.

This is really well done:
Thanks, those were very interesting. There look to be some good links at the end of the second one, too.
Julia,
The second site is very cool, and I forgot to link this before, but they also have a database(upper right hand corner), where you can find a really solid search for reference catalogs and books, though they are not on there, you can find texts by title and subject, and then search the web for them, many of which are digitized online.
If Todd @watership finds his way on here, I think there are some good references that could help him with that mysterious bowl he posted a bit ago, a Totoya type bowl. Overall the site has tons of information.

I read it through on a tablet, which meant I couldn't access the photo features easily. I will have a good look through on my computer this weekend - if the kitten I found gives me some peace! 😊
Julia,
First of all, wish I had a tablet, I will get one today, makes things easier I suppose.... secondly, I think this forum needs a photo of the kitten, just to authenticate it , ya know. 🤣 😆
I think this is more pertinent than the vase I will post later. By all means don't bother looking at the site on the computer, hell i'll send you some mackerel for the sweet thing....
Cheers,
Jeremy
You'll have to make do with this for now as it is has already been resized. That's my hair so it's not some rzndom photo I have taken off the Internet. 😋
I can't work out how to resize photos on this device. Will post a nice one tomorrow. In the meantime, if anyone wants a kitten ........
I do love him, but not sure I can trust my dog as that is how I found him. Life is a bit stressful. 😊
