Hello, I was on a trip in Japan recently and purchased a couple ceramics and I was curious if folks on this forum could let me know their opinion on their attribution/ origin and whether they look authentic or not. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff and I am trying to learn, any and all info would be helpful (I also put approx prices I paid on them just for reference).

1. Blue and white bowl (paid about 80 USD), seller told me it was chinese in origin and from the ming dynasty.

2. Blue and white shallow bowl (paid about 50 USD), seller said about the same as for 1.

3. Celadon color covered bowl with blue and white interior (paid about 60 USD), seller said this was japanese (imari) and from earlier in the edo period.

4. Celadon color bowl with "lotus petal designs" (paid around 100 USD), seller said this was Korean, "Goryeo Celadon". This one I am really curious about its age (and whether it looks authentic).

5. This last one I purchased in the US and the seller didn't know its origin specifically. I think he said he purchased it from someone who purchased it in japan. (Paid 70 USD). To me it sort of looks similar to some Korean Joseon vases I've seen online, but I really have no idea if its Korean or Japanese and if its old or modern.

I am curious if anyone has any thoughts! No worries if not but thank you if so!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You look to have some nice items there. I can't enlarge the photos at the moment but for this is my opinion from what I can see.

1. Looks Ming.

2. Same, but maybe a Swatow kiln. Could have been underwater looking at the discolouration.

3. The mark suggests Japanese but I am not familiar with these wares. Without the fuku, I would have guessed Vietnamese. 😊

4 it reminds me of Lonquan celadon lotus bowls, but I think it is more likely Korean.

5 This looks Korean, too.

Hopefully others will be along soon with their views.

Julia

They all look good to me, no obvious fake. No pictures can be enlarged recently, it must be a change in the forum. Taking the picture on a white plate is a clever idea. It clearly shows the typical green-blue body of the Ming bowl.

Hi Chris,

For #3, small celadon-glazed bowl with lid, mid-18th looks right, middle Edo.

@cheiscoo1001

Hi Chris, and as with others welcome to this great forum …

1, from the images this bowl dates to the late 15th/early 16th century, the exterior design is a private kiln interpretation coping a musk-mallow flower design, which is occasionally seen on early 15th century pieces. This design is best known on the famed ‘palace bowls’ order by the Imperial household and produced at the Imperial kilns for the Chenghua emperor, reigned 1465-1487 …

2, this dish dates to the early/mid 16th century, again made in the private kilns. The Gugong, Palace Museum Beijing holds a similar example, although this piece is somewhat highly overall quality …

As Japanese and Korean wares are not really my subject, I will defer to other forum members regarding dating attribution for the other pieces you posted …

Stuart

@shinigami I noticed photos no longer enlarge as well. I thought it was something wrong with my system, I'm off the hook, good to know. I miss being able to tap on the screen to get close ups of the details.

Hi Mark, I just check regarding the enlargement of images concern. I just clicked the images above and they all enlarged just fine. SO it appears to be a BROWSER issue. Clear Cookies and Cache and see if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Let me know, it should be ok.

Best Peter

@plcombs

I cleared my cache and still can't enlarge directly. But what I've been doing is saving desired picture into my photos folder, then opening from there, and they do enlarge.

@plcombs,

Hi Peter,

I cleared all my cookies.

It's not actually the enlargement that is the problem.

It's the zooming in using the enlarged photos that is no longer available.

I am using a Samsung S23 Ultra mobile phone and I used to until recently be able to click on the image, swipe upwards and then using two fingers zoom in on the image.

I still can do this, however I first need to save the image in my photos, log out of bidamount and then open and view the said photo in my saved album. All which is time consuming.

Hopefully my further explanation is of assistance to you.

Regards,

Mark

I just deleted cookies and it hasn't made a difference. I used to be able to tap the photo and then tap just outside the enlarged picture after which I was able to zoom in.

As Mark said, it is actually the ability to zoom that has disappeared.

Thanks for looking into it.

@imperialfinegems

On my iPhone16 I am able to zoom by pressing and holding the photo with index finger, when new tab opens then select “open” instead of copy, then when photo opens I can enlarge and zoom with two fingers.
