Hello

i wondered if i could get your opinions on this Buddha, i have not seen one with the design before but i really like it, but would it date to after the republic period?

also if someone could translate the makers mark i would be very grateful (or perhaps there is somewhere online with a list of makers?)

thanks

George

Yes 🙂  It's surprisingly good, not sure how I stumbled across it. So satisfying to use. Almost better than having the book at your fingertips.

Hi,

Thank you.  That is interesting as I found this one

http://www.archive.org/stream/manualofmarksonp00hoopuoft#page/n253/mode/2up

some time ago which looks to be from the same source.  I initially thought they were the same but the authors are different.

I wonder what other gems can be found there?

Julia

Thank you for sharing the links! A very good book is The new and revised handbook of marks on Chinese ceramics by Gerald Davison. Unfortunately it is sold for hilarious amounts now, when I bought it 4 years ago it was 70 Euro. Maybe there will be a reprint or you might stumble upon a used copy somewhere.

By the way George, I couldn't find your mark in Davison's book either.

Birgit

No-one has commented so far on whether they think this is old or not - the colours are very good , I think , esp the pale blue robe, and the subtle colours on his face. Nice skin tones, and modelling is very good, realistic and he has a nice expression. There are lots of these buddhas featured in some of Peter's videos and I seem to remember that deeper red cheeks were a feature of older (C18th) rather than C19th pieces.

But the base is the surest part to assess the date - colour of the unglazed porcelain , effects of firing on the unglazed parts, shape of the foot/base, evidence of wear etc. But I can't tell from the photo whether it's old or not. The mark in my opinion is neither here nor there, because any mark can be copied.

Of course if it is old, having a mark would enhance the value, because qing imperial pieces are almost always marked, and because chinese buyers love marks.

Why don't you send an email with more photos to Peter for his view?

🙂 lol

I never thought to actually explore the site, indeed their is a huge selection, however the better illustrated more modern books seem to require registration and then must be borrowed 🙂

Here is a comprehensive list ( One of the biggest out there) of every Chinese Republic 1912-1949  signature/backmark

https://watersilkdragon.wordpress.com/2013/05/05/chinese-republic-1912-1949-and-other-marks-overview/

About the Buddha

I  suspect your Buddha may be 1900-1940's Chinese Republic, but that is just a guess.

I also think that the nipples and belly button and also the frame and type of impression of the signature mark are extremely similar to these Buddha here below. Which would make your Buddha very valuable, but these two Buddha were valued at only $400 and I think their unique republican motif  is why they sold for $11 thousand, so at least if your's is similar then $400.

However please check that huge list of republican backmarks above. Failing that then ask about them on this forum where you will most likely get a translation of the signature at the very least.

Hi,

I am probably not seeing this correctly, but has the mark been made separately and placed inside a cut out square in the body?

I think I would say this is modern, I don't like all the wrinkles around his head, it looks odd as do the nipples.  I also think the base is wrong for an older piece and the mark unbalanced.

I am being very picky, and don't really know any of this is correct, so someone please, tell me if and why I am wrong!

The blue is very nice, though.

Best wishes,

Julia

thank you all for your replys and opinions, to me the Buddha seems a real mixture of modern and republic period features, so I have no idea! haha
