Dear all,
another post with strange items by me that are (from experience) likely to be modern 🙂
Due to the covid lockdown here in Germany there is not much left to do in my free time so I bought a large lot of paste boxes a few days ago.
I struggle to find Info about two of them.
The first one is definitely Chinese. I can´t decide if it is old and well made or just brand new. The Iron Red is a bit crazed what gives me slight confidence.
The second one is a bit lager and does not look Chinese at all. It is really nicely painted in my opinion. Does anyone know where and when it cloud have been made? The design looks European to me, but it seems to be unusual that it is not marked.
Thanks a lot
Robin
Hi Robin,
It's a modern box. Awfully painted.
Regards,
Grüße von der Ostseeküste 🙂

The second one has strong export porcelain style, decoration elements of Qianlong export porcelain. Not quite sure.
And it is molded with fine paste, not potted. That's why such cracks in the glaze.

Thanks!
How did you find it so fast?
As far as I can see the listing doesn‘t say anything regarding the age.
What do you think? Could it actually be Qianlong?
Regards
Robin
I didn´t find anything when searching for it.
If someone has a clue regarding the age: don't hesitate to make your guess 🙂

Robin
Hi @asiarob,
I like your export paste box. I wish I could contribute more to the conversation, but I was unable to find this design. I searched through my books on Chinese export porcelain, but to no avail. I wish I was able to search through Chinese Armorial Porcelain by David S. Howard, but I have been unable to procure a copy so far. It could be an armorial design, where the decorator did not successfully transfer the motto as provided above what appears to be an abbey Christian monk holding a bible. Just my guess. This could be why searching for the phrase returns almost no results. Looking forward to seeing what others have to say about the age. For what it's worth, it looks old to me, but I was just fooled by Birgit's Blanc de Chine modern Guanyin.
Kindly,
John
Hi John,
thanks for your detailed reply. I´ve done some more research and am convinced now that is 18. century armorial.
Here are two pieces to compare. The gilded decoration with the red margin, the style and colour the flowers are painted and the look of paste and glaze are quite similar to my Box.

Moreover I think my box may be a sugar box because it is larger than a paste box and I am not so sure if rich British people from the 18. century ever ordered paste boxes in European design.
Regards
Robin
Hi @asiarob,
You are smart to use the border and floral designs to help date the box. Here are some that contain similar designs dated to the latter half of the 18th century illustrated in Chinese Export Porcelain in North America by Jean Mudge:
I wasn't able to find any examples with a scrolling vine/floral pattern where the leaves are brown though. In regards to the shape, it could've been used for sugar. One book refers to this shape as just a generic round box that could've been made in sets to stack in, and another book illustrates a similar one as a toilet box and lid, whatever that is. There are separate sections for shapes made for sugar specifically, so I'd say the use is more generic.
Kindly,
John
Thanks for the images from the books. I‘ve started with the whole porcelain thing just two months ago and therefore don‘t own many books.
The leaves are not brown but gilded with few brown stripes in them to imitate the veins. They look brown because it was rainy and dark outside when I took the photo.

I completely understand! I started late last year, and I'm still learning. I'm prioritizing acquiring reference books so I can learn more about what I encounter at estate sales/auctions/thrift stores. Chinese export porcelain is what roped me into Asian art.
The leaves being gilded and striped are even more interesting to me. I'll be looking forward to seeing what others have to say still.
Kindly,
John
