Hi there!
here's an interesting item I acquired, 50 cms high, 90 x 90 cms square. It was sold as a table, but for what I see it's for meditation purposes.. interesting to see 4 bloomed lotuses, which represent enlightenment.. 19th century? 20th?
Cheers!
Hi Luis, to me it looks like a couch table. We have a similar one that was made in the 1980s in what was called then Colonial style. Ours has a metal frame made to look like wood but a similar pattern and wickerwork surface. Your table seems much older. Maybe some furniture experts here could tell you more.
Birgit
Well, I paid around 85$ for it...so even if it's an antique chinese cat bed, with a built in scratch mat, I don't mind:>
but how can we distinguish from this: https://www.lotsearch.net/lot/a-huanghuali-meditation-stool-47831294 or this: https://nicholaswells.com/shop/works-of-art/oriental/a-very-rare-huanghuali-square-meditation-stool-chandeng-18th-century/
between a "regular" table from a meditation platform? maybe someone can shed light to this matter...
Thanks!
Hi Luis,
In my opinion your mediation table is from the early part of the 20th century. Perhaps 1930's onwards.
I believe it's been treated by the picture #6. It appears to have drip marks from varnish/other. It may also be constructed out of different periods of woods etc.
The two examples posted by you are Huanghuali wood. This species along with zitan are very sought after atm and priced accordingly. I do believe yours is Huanghuali by way of the grain etc.
Mark
Hi Mark, I do agree regarding benn treated with some kind of waxing or varnish and got more reddish, I have to take better photos when I get it here... I'm now thinking how to approach regarding cleaning, mainly I would like to bring back the original wood color.. maybe I should take it to a restorer to try to bring it to a more original look, in a non invasive way.
Should I?
btw could this bed be in huanghuali wood? looks like it (got it also)
Hi Luis,
The bed or low table is not Huanghuali wood. In my opinion it resembles YuMu or elm wood. It's got a beautiful grain. I also believe it is from the 20th century. Older YuMu tends to have a reddish look.
Personally I probably wouldn't try to restore the mediation table. Purely on a economic view. Especially so if it's been made from reconstructed material.
Mark
Thanks for your insight! yes, I'll probably just clean it well. The bed has a very nice grain indeed, once I get it here, I'll post it
Accept my best wishes!
@lep Have you tried meditating on it? Just curious, as I had not heard of meditation tables but I do meditate.
@lep Interesting. I suppose it would possibly give one a more suspended feeling while practicing. Maybe it would aid in the process.
@johnshoe, yes, I think that elevation and structure might be nice.. I will sure try it.
Best wishes!
Hi Luis,
Can you tell if the rattan or wicker work is hand woven and each strand is pegged into those holes we can see on the underside or is it cut from a pre woven sheet cut to fit the table. It is always difficult I.D. timber from photo's but I think Mark is on the right track with his comments on both the tables you have provided photo's for. From what I can see the first table pictured seems to have been in the hands of a restorer at some stage the underside is not what you might expect of an older table and the overall varnish finish has been applied rather to thickly. Perhaps when you have it with better photo's you might get more informed opinions.
Michael
@brettm , hi, I think each strain or group of them should be pegged there and it's not a patch cut. I will get some good photos for us to dissect it.. The red waxy/varnish thing seems to be a classic look they would put on there back in the early 20th cent, no?
Thanks!
