Hey Folks,
Another oddity.... seems to be my thing.
I bought this off ebay yesterday, and I know the border is 100 antiques and I know the form is a ruyi head, but I have never seem the central design, which is auspicious animals. Has anyone seen this pattern? my guess is early to mid 19th century.
The colors are amazing, and though there is damage, the fact that I couldn't find it in my books, and the lively creatures made me buy it.
Just wondering your thoughts.
Jeremy
Thanks,
Yeah definitely going to look into the repair once it arrives. I figured it was earlier in the date range since I haven't seen such a large ruyi head dish from later times. It is almost 11.5 inches across. The enamels are so vibrant, it is just kinda out of the norm for these pieces.
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy I have a tureen has strange design as well, repaired like yours. I think mine is early 19th as well. Size: 14” x11
Dragons as borders.
Beautiful palette, I love the scene too. I have seen that scene before, I cannot remember where, maybe Peabody Essex or something like that. The dragon border I think was used around 1830, and the soft enamels definitely fit that time frame.
Thanks for sharing it.
Jeremy
Thanks Jeremy for the lead, I will look into it. I think one of your creatures is Qilin, a very colorful lovely dish!. Are both of us rose medallion or famille rose?
Yin
Yin,
I think yours falls more into Mandarin palette territory, as the dragon chasing the pearl border is a different pattern than rose medallion. here is a similar example to yours, though different central design. I was off by a few years.

Mine is kind of an oddball, the border definitely shares characteristics with the rose medallion borders, but the central scene is an odd enamel group, though I suppose falls into the mandarin palette.
Jeremy
Brian,
I completely agree. I actually stumbled upon this dish while deciding to buy a staple repaired borderless Yongzheng/Qianlong dish for myself. Kinda love the old repairs like that.
Jeremy
Thanks Russell,
I thought it was an interesting design lay out and the closeups have the most charming enamels. Looking forward to adding it to the shelf of goodies.
Jeremy
Hey Folks,
So I am still struggling to find a comp for my dish, however I have stumbled on a lovely "era" of canton enameled wares that is interesting in its creativity. It is the sort of precursor to the rose canton, rose medallion, rose mandarin patterns, specifically it seems enamel decorated wares from the late 1790s to maybe 1825, and seems to just be "Canton Famille Rose" wares.
I did find a dreamy punch bowl that sold at christies, with many similarities in the decorations to my dish, the rainbow clouds on the interior decoration and the mythical beasts in the interior panels.
This is certainly an area I intend to study more, but for now, what I glean form the bit of digging recently, during this period there was a lot of creativity amongst the decorators, and while mass production was the goal, quality and creativity were still prized, higher than quantity.
Also I wish to amend slightly what I said to Yin about the enamels and their differences, I suspect that hers is also of this "Canton Famille Rose" family, I am including an example.
Cheers,
Jeremy

@yinchris An example for you, though the high price is I suspect the Armorial factoring in.
the second is still these enamels, but I think a lesser quality than yours.
The way the fence is painted shows up in different eras, but I have seen this design element on European export ware from the 18th century before.
I know this because I have handled and sold an example and did my research first.
Russell,
Interesting, I know I have seen the fence in landscape spaced out like this on pieces of Chinese Imari as early as Kangxi, and blue and white on late Kangxi into early Yongzheng. Curious what yours was and whether it was bordered or borderless?
I think mostly these borderless examples range from 1730-50 or so, but there are of course outliers.
Jeremy
