I am pretty dumb when it comes to Song era stuff so forgive me if this is an absurd consideration, but I am wondering if this might be from back then or otherwise old and Asian? It doesn't come across too well, but on the inside there are coppery specks that glisten where the glaze has separated. In some places the glaze maybe has a teadusty look. The piece is a bit lighter than what you think it is going to weigh just by looking at it. At any rate, this is a study piece for me, so teach me if you care to my forum friends! Cheers, John
Is there any chance the colorful bits in the interior is from an artist using this to hold paint brushes? I would totally consider Song or earlier if it were not for the copper and purple? specks inside.
I bought a nice ancient Greek pot once that an artist had used for their brushes, and the inside had a ton of funky colors all over, but a dab of acetone removed some of the color and I realized it was actually quite old.
Jeremy
What a lovely piece. All I can say is I have seen the pronounced lip on Song pieces, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything relevant.
@jbeer2121 Here's a bunch more pictures I took outside in the sun today, so this is a much better look at it.
John,
I wish I could give you a more decisive answer, I am still not sure about the purple and metallic flecks inside (I would see if they are "removable" with warm soapy water or a q-tip with acetone/alcohol, paint thinner even, if it was mine), and the concentric rings in the foot look odd, but I don't know enough to say yay or nay, the Song dynasty feet are varied, and always seemingly neatly trimmed from the few I have seen in person. The glaze, body, and form looks like a Song Henan black glazed jar, with russet splashes or inclusions. What ever it is, its pretty, especially in the sun.
It would definitely have a spot on my shelf of goodies, just for the glaze alone.
Jeremy
I wonder if it could be a Thai jar. The glaze, the brownish bottom with the concentric rings and the knob in the middle reminds me of Thai ceramics. Also the fact that it's lighter than expected.
Birgit
@johnshoe I have a similar glazed Chinese sauce bottle. Probably 18th/19th century.
I like the theory about the use as a brush holder, as I use pieces of pottery for brush holder, although you would not find paint drips in mine, as I was taught to clean my brushes with ivory soap bar before putting them away and turpentine for oil paint, good brushes are expensive. The blue certainly looks like paint drips, as suggested, try to remove the drips. Ditto on sunshine look.
Well it appears we have a bit of a mystery with this one. Perhaps I will seek Peter's opinion. This might have a similar vibe: https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2002/fine-chinese-ceramics-works-of-art-n07822/lot.84.html
Just a guess, but as GoodwillHunter says, I lean towards a late 18th, early 19th century Shiwan ware piece, copying an earlier Song style and glaze.
Charles
Update: I had Peter look at it and he says it is Song dynasty. They apparently made them by the millions so they aren't rare or valuable, but I am happy to own it as a nice old example. Cheers! John
@jbeer2121 he mentioned it being "sort of Henan or tenmuku" or something that sounded like that.
Hi John,
I own a similar jar that I bought from Edmund Grundner a year or two ago ( https://www.trocadero.com/stores/disini/items/1096843/beautiful-glazed-Song-Dynasty-Henan-pot). Peter also confirmed a Song dynasty age for it. I have since seen this shaped jar not uncommonly for auction since then (both with a ground mouth rim like mine and unground like yours), usually in brown to black glazes. (Mine is also very light, the walls are quite thin.) It's pretty neat to be able to own a well made object from 800+ years ago for a reasonable amount of money!
Cheers,
Will
@goodwillhunter Usually late 19th early 20th Century. Heres mine.
