I came across what I was told is a 19th century Bough Pot.
Would love the group thoughts?
Thanks.
wow , this looks like a very high quality vase, the panels with landscape and tiny figures are pretty special, imo . And the whole vase is well-shaped, elegant and beautiful. C19th canton items don't often get to this level, so I would think this is older , mid to late C18th. It looks to be in very good condition, with the gilding intact, and is a good size for display , or for flowers (I guess that is what is meant by bough pot?).
If you have the chance to buy it , and it's not crazy expensive, I would definitely try to get it. (of course check the condition carefully , using UV light to check for repairs etc)
tam
Agree with all of Tam’s comments. I would date it to mid 19th Dao Guang or Hsien Feng. Too well decorated to be late 19th, Really a nice item.
George
It is very beautiful but he has priced that into the item. Over priced certainly but a rare example of quality.
This is certainly a rare beauty but you can find more beautiful items at a lower price. You should negotiate this down to something under $1500 if condition and size is acceptable.
These sold at Sothbey's for £620 so you at these prices, you can shop at Chrisities or Sotheby's.
This is the best quality of rose medallion I ever saw. Definitely 19th century, the pattern developed from Daoguang on. However I would date it a little later than Alan, after 1850. I have read somewhere that the black rim around the cartouche, as it can be seen on the inside rim, appeared later in the century. Unfortunately I can’t remember where I read it and I stand to be corrected. Generally the quality of rose medallion declined with time, because of the growing demand of cheap items. But technically they were still able to produce great quality if the buyer paid for it.
Birgit
Wow! I can only echo what everyone has said about how lovely this is! Without a doubt, the nicest piece of rose medallion that I have seen, too. I would also date it to around mid 19th c. I didn't know that about the black outlines, so that could make it later.
Best wishes,
Julia
hi Short dong , is this (the original vase) on ebay ? the OP doesn't mention the price , so I wonder how you found it . I think the other items on Christies are good but perhaps more common than the vase here, and it's hard to compare directly on price . The sothebys warrior vases are C20th and not nearly so nice , imo.
There is a very nice rose mandarin bough pot, similar to the christies pair, in the newsletter this week , (with some damage)

Thanks Tam,
I did some sleuthing and found the Bough Pot but did not want to divulge too much information so as not to interfere in the OP's dealings. His find so i will leave it to him. I was just curious what the price was. It is in Heuston texas. Also how tall it was. I am guessing 16 inches.
I really should try dig up the providence and find out what the original price the Auction house bought it at.
This from MIGULARRY
Yes, a coincidence no doubt 🙂 Also very good condition. 18th century. It is already at £215 pounds and still 2 days to go and it certainly will climb higher in price. This is why i think that Mandarin bowl i posted despite the damage was a very good value at £40 + ... I am still undecided on it. I also think the quality of the Artistry was better on the bowl. The Bowl was almost as high as this bough Pot and was wider again. So imagine a Bowl bigger than this, despite it's flaws it has a value 🙂
Hence my question..how much is enough for something like that. I will watch this and see what Price it wins at.
Hi everyone and thank you for all of the comments! Short Dong, you are a great sleuth! I believe the vase has transferred hands since the price you found it. It came from a dealer who has since retired and I believe the website you found is old.
We bought two more pieces from him that I will post. One I posted tonight-- a elephant vase. What do you all think of that one?
Can someone please tell me what an OP is? Original Poster?
I had to look up "bough pot" as I had not heard that before. For anyone else that doesn't know, it seems it is a vessel, often with a flat side, that would sit on the hearth in summer with a display of flowers etc to decorate the fireplace; this was common practice across Europe in the 18th and 19th century. I am not sure the original vase is typical of that type, it certainly wouldn't have occured to me to describe it as such.
I am moving along my learning curve this morning!
Julia
Hi Julia, yes OP means original poster, and I agree her/his vase is not the same as the bough pots listed on ebay .
I also didn't know what a bough pot was, but the one above (from the newsletter ) has a typical cover and holes for the flowers. I think the square sided design must have come from a western (silver?) object, a bit like the mustard pots and cream jugs you find in export porcelain which were modelled on silver originals.
The OP's vase may once have had a cover, I suppose, but the shape looks more chinese than western , and may have a particular name , but I don't know (it's quite like a cuspidor , or zhadou (?) )
tam
Thanks, Tam. ?

I was kind of surprised, i was checking out one of Peters videos because of something Shinigami had said about Mandarin starting around or after Daoguang and in Peters video he has a collection in his shop and they are all very beautiful example but lo and behold he has a Cuspidor ( bough pot) that is as beautiful as yours and with a slightly different but similar landscapes. It is at 53 seconds into the video.
