Hi Haley,

I’m not sure if these vases are Republic. They look more like a modern copy. Some closeup pictures of the painted people would help.

Hayley,

Beautiful pair of vases in the Republican Period style dated 2015. They are too nice and perfect - they are new.

The mirror is also very recent:

“Li Bai (also known as Li Bo, or Li Taibai), a Tang Dynasty Poet, enjoyed his wine”

I agree with both Birgit and George. Both of these look modern.

Do not buy these!

Good intention to not make mistake purchases. That's my intention too, however sometimes I'm still bad. In fact, I think I just bought something stupid yesterday because I didn't post it here first. Oh god, when will I truly learn....

Don't worry to much about it John. We all make mistakes. It's part of the training process. We all have to pay our dues. 🙏

I would like to view them if you don't mind.

@imperialfinegems  It's a candlestick and it's in the mail on it's way to me. I figured out after I bought it that it's not even Asian. Seems to be made by an early 20th C glass company ironically named Imperial Glass. I had myself convinced it was an amazing rock crystal carved piece. Until I found a hundred other examples just like it after the fact. At any rate, it's kind of cool looking and it wasn't expensive. Which by the way has become a mantra for me "anyway, it wasn't expensive".  Perhaps I'll get t-shirts made with that saying on it. Would any of you like to buy one? It will say "Anyway, it wasn't expensive" - An Asian arts collecting proverb.

I think buying mistakes help with education and experience. Buy even mistakes have value as decor it’s just as hot right now. There is a market for both if I can buy a modern piece for $25 buck and sell it for $100 that’s a good profit.

@bigfrank300471  Well, you are in the right place to learn. I'm only a couple years into this journey, so I'm just a newbie. But some of the things I've learned are:

1. I'd rather regret buying something (that's within my budget) that I shouldn't have bought than regret not buying something I wish I had. There are a few things I encountered early on that I feel could have been very, very nice, but I walked away unsure of myself and being frugal. Those are the ones that keep me up at night.

2. Don't just take our word for it. There are very knowledgeable collectors and dealers here, but we don't always agree and we don't know it all. Pictures can be deceiving and people's judgement can be off sometimes, so by all means seek the advice and knowledge of the members here and elsewhere, but keep your wits about you and keep studying and learning. I have gotten both accurate and inaccurate, and at times conflicting opinions presented to me here by very experienced collectors all with great knowledge. Everyone means well, and we all want each other to succeed. But at the end of the day, we each have to make up our own minds for ourselves, so don't take anyone's word as gospel.

3. Know your budget. As a new collector, you are sometimes going to be in situations where you aren't sure about a piece and there isn't an opportunity to get expert assistance and advice fast enough. In those moments, know how much you are willing to part with on a gamble. How much are you okay spending on something and it turns out not to be anything of much value? Come up with a figure and stay in that ballpark with your gambles. Anything much over that and you should try to have more certainty about your purchase. Even then you can still end up making bad buys, but it's less likely if you set the intention and have a plan to avoid it.

Those are just a few things that might come in handy for you. Ask lots of questions and post as much as you want. I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you find. Cheers!  John

@johnshoe Hi John, you mentioned another great mystery of collecting. Before buying you can’t find any information but as soon as you have clicked on „buy“ you find lots of similar items on the web, all sold for less. I have experienced this so often that I think it’s some cosmic law.

@shinigami  Yes, it is true. Somehow the buying of a piece immediately opens up a whole universe of new information about it. Perhaps unbought pieces cloak themselves in mystery on purpose as defensive protection against the wary buyers, so as to lure us in, and then they just take down the cloak as soon as we own them. The phenomenon isn't entirely unlike how moving in with a person suddenly helps you learn so much more about them.
