Hey Folks,
A friend of mine gave me these today, as ivory is nearly impossible to sell, and I like them, as a trade for a painting restoration for him. I am curious what you all think, and also if anyone can read the signature on the one. I think they are quite lovely, and while not super detailed, they seem to be of good quality. They are both about 4" tall.

I am curious why you think so late? I am fairly certain they were purchased just prior to the second world war, the gentleman whose collection they came from was a foreign service officer in the 30s.

@jbeer2121 It's the small size, rigid form, choppy carving, and the looseness of the scratched designs.
Okimonos were an invention of European tourism during the start of the Meiji when quality netsuke were already running short in supply, and since traditional clothes were being replaced with European clothes with pockets, the need for netsuke was dwindling.
So, ivory artists started carving small netsuke sized figures without the himotoshi (holes) for the cord, but the quality was outstanding. Consequently, while your figure is small like early okimono, the quality does not compare.
I had several early miniature okimono that I sold because at the the time they were not as valuable as the larger okimono, not realizing how rare they were, and now I live with the regret. I still have some ... I'll post in a bit.
Anyway...back to the history of Okimono. Later in the Meiji, the okimonos got larger, but ultra realism of the Tokyo school was quite popular, so the quality remained absolutely fantastic (Golden Era of Okimono). Your okimno lack both size and quality for this period.
By the end of the Meiji, the okimono just about dissappeared (perhaps the best artists died), but after WWII when the USA occupied Japan, the art re-emerged, but as a tourist trade copying earlier pieces.
So, yes, I guess they could be as early as 1945-1952 during the occupation of Japan, but when China opened in the 1970's, it was fairly common for travelers to visit Japan while they were in the 'East', so I generally put a more conservative dating... the exact date really doesn't matter once you're talking about post-Meiji ivory.
Post WW2 on my opinion. The carving quality OK but not mastery when compared to Meiji period.

@jbeer2121 Here's the smallest I've ever owned... the size of a small netsuke of Urashima Taro sharing saki with Minogame, the 1000 year old turtle (as shown with seaweed growing from his shell).

And, while these are a bit on the dirty side and a little damaged, here ate three pieces I still have…
Right is a dog and drum netsuke from late Edo period, middle is a miniature okimono of a broom maker swatting at puppies from early Meiji, and left an okimono of a swordsman and his loyal hunting dog mid Meiji period.
The left figure is about 20cm tall.
But I do like the first guys pants. Those are stylin'!
@johnshoe Generally, the carving of genuine netsuke and okimono should be quite fine, and the nature of the figure should range from whimsical to extremely realistic… sometimes a nice mix of the two.

Thanks for the nice explanation, and Wow! gorgeous examples. I guess the man picked them up later, no worries, they should still display nicely, and I didn't spend anything on them. I will say now that I put them next to my earlier one, it is quite obvious the quality difference.
