Hi everyone,
Local auction is on again and I haven't had time to go and view. I looked at the catalogue and liked this. As you know, I don't mind modern but I don't want to buy a deliberate fake of something. Does anyone please have any advice? Starting price will be about £35 and it is 10 inches high.
Thanks for your help.
Julia
Julia,
What a wonderful vase, both the shape and carved designs are beautiful. Wondering if auction catalog has any further info re: material, etc. as I rarely have seen ceramics with that beautiful carving (I love cranes among pines and clouds). As far as origin, the mark appears to be a makers name, but could be either Chinese or Japanese (hard to tell). If you like it, go for it at that price point. ?
George
Hi Julia -
Very beautiful piece, such an elegant shape and very finely carved designs, wonderful cranes amongst pines, clouds and sun(or moon?)
As with NicDan, I initially thought Japanese but I could well be wrong. From the images, it appears to have some age - but you really need to see handle to confirm! I would agree with George, if you like it then go for it ...
Stuart
Dear Julia,
Great vase as you may know I like carved items. Looks like you have found a Wang Bingrong vase that may be an original. I only have a small screen available at the moment so can't see your vase in great detail from what I can see the mark looks to be right.
Good luck at the Auction !
Cheers
Michael

Hi Julia,
Lovely vase. Looks like Michael hit the nail on the head again, as he often does. Here’s a piece from a Christie’s sale. I don’t have the experience to say if your’s is a genuine one, as you know. The carving on the Christie’s item does seem to be at a slightly higher level to my eyes. The mark looks very good, but that is not the best indicator I understand. If it is genuine, its certainly worth far more than £35.
Best, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Thanks everyone! So helpful, as always!
I will see if I can get down there this morning and handle it. Will update later.
Julia
Todd, Michael, thank you, just read the links, very interesting! If it is real, I would be very fortunate to get it at that price. ? Back later!
Dear Julia,
I do not have the same enthusiasm as others about this vase.
No doubt it looks nice, but the chances that it is an original Wang Bingrong are the same of the jar from that “Chineseartinscotland” site, i.e. equal to zero. (BTW that site is selling a lot of poor fakes at high prices”.
In my opinion, if you like it regardless the age and can get it at low price, then you should go as suggested by others.
But if you like to have things with at least some age, then it is not the case.
It is clear that the vase has been purposely “aged” by smearing it with a dark substance. You can see that the distribution of that artificial dirty is uniform everywhere, including the carved mark. It has no sense. This to me is a clear indication that it is a recent piece.
Best regards
Giovanni
Thanks, Giovanni. ? I have learnt to be cautious and appreciate your concerns. If this is real, it will have been seen by many others so I would indeed be lucky to get it for this price. I would also expect there to be more people watching it, than just me! There aren't.
I am hoping they may allow me to have a quick look before the auction starts. Going there now.
Julia
I managed to have a quick look. My impression, nice carving: in the photos it looks as though there are large parts of the decoration that are flat eg parts of the tree, but they are carved but with less depth so it is harder to see. The footrim is very smooth. The vase is not as heavy as I expected. As for the dirty areas, some of it wiped off. Some of it is in the deeper recesses of the carved areas and I couldn't get that to move, couldn't easily get at it either. I will wait and see what happens at the bidding. There is another vase there that I liked, similar style, was being auctioned last time but didn't sell. It is quite damaged, unsigned but I like the buffalo or cow and calf on it, that is only starting at £18 and comes with a teapot. Maybe I will see what happens with that, too. In case you are interested, this is it.
Didn't buy the white one, got the auctioneer I don't like who always starts bidding high and never drops far. Not sure it sold, although he seemed to say it did.
I don't think the original vase is beautiful or good: the shape is strange and heavy , and the carving is quite crude , imo, and I would think it's a new copy. There are an awful lot of poor 'wangbingrong' copies around
tam
Well, I am having a bad day auction-wise (2 auctions, empty-hands!) so maybe not going for that was something I can view as a positive. ?
