Hey Folks,
A regular dealer whose site I check for Japanese wares and the occasional Ming piece had this and I couldn't help myself it looked so pretty. Plus I'm a sucker for a kintsugi repaired piece. I am thinking it is a Japanese copy of a Jun ware bubble bowl, and at 6.1 cm its basically a miniature. Anyways, not my normal thing but I figured I'd ask for y'alls opinions.
There is some crud on the glaze that washed right off, in these photos, but it just appears slightly brown in the pics.
Many thanks,
Jeremy
How do you know it’s Japanese?
I have no idea, I just figured it couldn't possibly be early jun ware, with what I paid.... I know literally nothing about it, haha.
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 I can’t help you in that department Peter did say early Jun wares are rare.
Yeah, it seems fairly unlikely... was thinking about posting it to Gotheborg, seems to be some knowledgeable folks on there about these wares.... but I'd feel kinda silly if its just a newish Japanese sake cup or something...
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 I bet once you get that thing in your hand it's almost impossible to put down. I'd probably just carry it around with me everywhere I went.
@jbeer2121 I guess now you'll have to quit your day job so you can be with it full-time.
So I got over my hesitation and fear of looking silly on Gotheborg, and posted it and it seems that it's a good thing too..... Initial responses seem to indicate it is Jin to Yuan Dynasty and even though it is tiny, there are a few ( literally just a handful) similarly sized ones that are known, two of which are in the palace museum with one that is even smaller, tiny tiny at 4.5cm diameter. Mind blowing to me that this delicate little beauty has so much age possibly.
Jeremy
I did get the chance to snap a few pictures in the light box, and a close up of the inside of the foot showing the very fine turnings and trimmings.
I was playing around this morning, figured I'd post this fun shot of a variety of glazes...
I know nothing about them but I do like your one very much.
If I were you I would ask Peter. I think you might be pleasantly surprised with his response.
Mark
The glaze looks right to me and compares well to examples in my collection. My only concern is that the foot looks to be slightly trimmed around the outside edge. All mine are trimmed to be square shaped.
William,
I was wondering that too, I think the earlier they are has something to do with that. I think later ones have a angled outer edge to the foot, and earlier they are squared off( just my theory, but it seems the Song dynasty are very square cut and the Yuan ones are much more tapered). I wish I could post images form Gotheborg because there are a few examples on there with solid provenance. I did find one from Sotheby's where it is quite heavily trimmed and one form Christie's where it is slightly trimmed inward.
Glad to hear the glaze looks right at least.
Thanks,
Jeremy
