Dear friends I need help here. The guy sold me as Qing, but I think it’s Ming Wanli. I do have a few days to return it if it’s not authentic. The pot is big and heavy, about 15lbs. The color is blue with kind is green on it. Your comments are highly appreciated.
Not sure what you are asking, but if it is whether you were correct in thinking it was Ming then my answer is no. It was sold as Qing, which it may be, later kitchen Qing, in my opinion. That dragon has a bad case of crazy eyes, I do not recall seeing another exactly like that ever. See what others think. Sharon
@sharonp Thanks Sharon. I couldn't find anything like this on Google, but I found one on the Chinese website: says Ming 4 ears dragon pot.
The seller said it's before 1800, I will keep this pot if he is right. Thank you!
Not my area either, but I agree with Sharon and Mark, it isn't Ming nor do I feel it is earlier than 1800.
I would be a little surprised if it is kitchen Qing. It has been given that sketchy, washed-over appearance by the colouring, but beneath it is a very precise outline of the decoration which I haven't seen in either Ming or Kitchen Qing.
I may be wrong, but might it be a modern replica? Are the seller's other items genuine?
Maybe Stuart or Birgit will look in with their opinions.
I think Julia is right. To me it looks neither Ming nor Kitchen Qing but rather like something modern that‘s trying desperately to look old. In all times the potter and painter have tried to do their best with the techniques they had at hand. When I see sloppily applied glaze it’s always a warning sign to me. Of course Kitchen Qing was mass produced and churned out quickly but they had years of experience so the results still look nice. If you see something that looks badly glazed and overly careful painted at the same time: keep away from it.
Birgit
Hi Yin Chris -
Agree with Sharon, Julia and Birgit, this has little age ...
The painting style, motifs, cobalt and glaze tones and application of, glaze/body and surface pits, gaps, stain imperfections and finishing of the footrim/base are all wrong but trying to give the impression of age ...
Very far from Ming or even Qing, IMO ...
As mentioned numerous times by other forum members, one should be very cautious regarding pieces advertised by/on Chinese based dealers/websites ...
Stuart
@ming1449 Thanks Stuart, Birgit, Julia, Sharon, Mark and Brian for your input. I bought this piece from a local dealer in US. Seller has guaranteed with the ages and authenticity. Just ordered a report from Peter, hopefully with Peter's reputation, I should get my money back if it's a modern piece.
@ming1449 No worries, Stuart. I have no trained eyes and so glad to have you guys to help me out, will definitely let you know after Peter is getting back to me. Thanks.
Yin
Received the response from Peter, here is the summary from the video (he couldn't type): It's a late Ming/ early Qing Swatow oil/wine/water Pot, well used with stains, inexpensive cobalt made the color varies can be very light and darker (kind of black). Large handles and neck are solid strong for carry purpose, foot rim looks right and smooth, age cracks have light grey areas around (modern fake would not have this). The expression of Dragon face is good and scales are well drawn. The character "Jade" in the cloud is nice. I think that is all from Peter.
Yin Hall, good for you. I think it must have been the bad case of crazy eyes that authenticated it. 😁
