Hello Friends,
I would like to double check with you in regards to this vase. IMO it is a Kangxi period vase, what do you think ?
Thank you
It reminds me a bit of the blue and white transitional vase that I think was on one of Peter's videos recently. I find that red quite harsh, like it needs to be balanced by some other colour. The way the figure in red has been outlined is interesting, too.
Those are just my passing comments; I will also be waiting to hear expert opinions.
I don't know much so take it with a grain of salt, but...What's up with that one spot on the base that isn't dark? How does one explain that? And is it me or does the surface actually seem a bit sugary in spots where the light plays with it? I'd like to look down inside of it. If possible can you get a shot of the inside that allows us to see down to the bottom? I'm very curious what the more knowledgeable members will have to say.
In my opinion your jar is not Kangxi period but much later. Late 19th century.
Mark
It is really nicely decorated.
I would say it's 18th C.
I like it.
Regards,
Adrian

Thank you all for responses. I requested extra pictures let's see.
With all due respect Mark I disagree with your dating. what makes you think it is a late 19th? They style, the shape, the colors are very Kangxi or 18th. As Birgit said the bottom looks too greyish and not the normal beige that what makes me doubt a little bit.
I found a similar famille vert vase but they are also not sure of the dating. so it does not help...lol
This looks good for kangxi to me and it's a nice vase - the base seems old. with soot or smoke from the kiln probably acounting for the colour, and the mouth rim is fritted or dressed in a brown colour and looks properly old. Decoration is very interesting , with some variations in the enamel colours which is attractive, imo. The figures with the qilin and the big palm tree make a nice theme
tam
Sorry I meant to write late 18th century and not 19th century! 😊
Primarily by the way the base looks. Other than that its a beautiful example.
Just my thoughts my friend. As you know Kangxi is not my area atm. I am more into republican period porcelain, Japanese and jades.
Mark
Dear Mark nothing to be sorry about, I was just trying to understand what made you think it was not a kangxi. This is why I enjoy this forum as everyone can share their opinions and there is always someone who knows a bit more 🙂 Thank you for taking part into the discussion. I have new pictures of the interior and of the rim.
My note of caution would be that the unglazed base with no foot is generally a Shunzhi trait on these type of Vases.
I find this a contradiction to the painting style and muddy enamel greens.
Just cautious I guess and I’d seek the opinion of both Giovanni and xhi
I am looking at this now. I share Vic’s thoughts. The neck, the decoration of the neck, and the base (excessively dirty) looks really ok for Shunzhi.
The face of the figures is Yongzheng, the motif was very common in the 19th century. And on more of that, there are details pointing toward the Kangxi revival of the late 19th century.
Too many inconsistencies for a 18th century dating.
Don’t know exactly, but I must say that today they are really good in making old looking items. The main key in detecting fakes has always been the base, but now that is no more true. I have seen a supposed Ming jar these days which base was superb, really convincing, and the rest was really old looking, but it was a fake.
I would be cautious with this one.
Giovanni
I would slightly change my initial dating: might be even a bit earlier than I thought.

Given the differences of opinion on this one I would love to see Peter address it in his next video and see what he has to say.
