this could be so far my best find on chinese porcelain, this piece checks all the marks for me, the only thing I am not quiet sure about is the seal mark, I found that it's similar to jiaqing mark but there is some variation, can you confirm that guys?
I used this site to compare the two seal marks:
Hi Ibrahim,
Your Dayazhai styled teapot looks to have a stylized Guangxu reign mark rather than a Jiaqing reign mark. I'm not sure about age, and hope someone else could chime in on that. I like the shading of the flowers, but the hard yellow is a bit strong for me.
Kindly,
John
Unfortunately in my opinion this tea pot is a modern piece. Post 1950 onwards.
Mark
I agree, it’s post 1950, damaged and the colors don’t harmonize. Don’t judge pieces by their marks, in most cases they’re irrelevant.
Birgit
@shinigami I am so speechless, can you tell where can I have a solid knowledge about porcelain! I am doing always the same mistakes, I'm so rush in my judgement!
@imperialfinegems can you give your remarks on how you found out!
@bartholin thank you for sharing your observations very interesting
Basically through years of studying books on certain periods of porcelain. Visiting museums. Going to auction houses like sotheby's etc. I have plenty of time on my hands. So I devote my time to study and self-improvement.
It's important to note that in my opinion it's impossible to try and study the whole thing at once. You will get very confused. It's best to pick a period you like and start there. I stated with republican period porcelain. Once you get a handle you can progress to another period. Eventually it will all fall into place. But.... There is always something new to learn no matter how much you study/learn etc.
Jades on the other hand are a different kettle of fish. Books are helpful but you need to handle them. And preferably have some knowledge of gems in general. Like diamonds.
Having a or befriending someone who knows the area you are interested in helps immensely.
Mark
Hi Ibrahim, in this field knowledge comes slowly with looking at as many items as possible. Some people are lucky to have great museums in their vicinity. If (like me) you don’t have any, you can look at museum websites or look at the picture galleries on bidamount. This site is a great resource, discover its possibilities.
Books are also helpful. I like „Anthony Allen: The Detection of Fakes“ because it deals with the stuff you find on Ebay and elsewhere, not the high class items that at least I will never call my own.
Buying affordable 17th-19th century export porcelain from trusted sellers (e.g. with the help of one of Bidamounts shopping pages) is also a good way to train your eye so you recognize if something worth collecting comes your way.
Birgit
@shinigami Birgit, can you remind me what the name of the book is that was being discussed not long ago that shows the different types of faces, etc.? I'm pretty sure you have a copy of said book if I am remembering correctly. Thanks! John
I am planning on buying one in the coming weeks. I think it's a fantastic referral book that would pay for itself etc etc.
Mark
Hi all,
I apologize for reviving this thread, but I'm still confused about this teapot. My confusion is mostly motivated by Josh Chamberlain's upcoming auction, where I saw this nifty bowl that really reminded me of this teapot:
The bowl and the teapot look very similar to me with the hard yellow enamel ground, shading of the flowers, and the mark looks exactly the same. Josh has dated the punch bowl to the early 20th century. Could anyone help me understand the differences that make the teapot later and the bowl earlier?
Kindly,
John
