Hi everyone!
I found this 7" vase at Goodwill yesterday. Seems to be Japanese export Imari but I can't figure out when it was made. If you can date this vase please explain so that those of us who are still learning can educate our eye and understanding. I am also wondering how much it is worth. Thanks for your help!
Carla
I also think this is around the first quarter of the 20th c. For me, generally speaking the painting does not have the quality or the refinement of earlier pieces.
@julia @imperialfinegems @steve Thanks for responding so quickly! And thanks for helping me find when it was made.
I didn't think it was 20th c because the similar examples I found when searching were from the 18th and 19th c. I appreciate your expertise in recognizing the correct date of this. Please help me understand what elements make it 20th vs earlier. Julia mention the refinement and quality is lacking that is present in earlier pieces, which makes sense to me but when I was looking for examples of Japanese export, much of the early pieces seemed to be quickly painted like this example from Chinese Export Porcelain in North America. I'm not questioning your opinion, I'm trying to learn how to recognize the differences.
Hi Carla,
I found a fairly similar pair here which have very similar drawing but you can see how much more carefully they have been drawn and how less overpowering the underglaze blue is. The shape is also tighter, it has a better posture
I did consider whether yours might be earlier, but I have seen other hastily drawn pieces with meiji/taisho dates with careless colouring, but what really decided me in the end was the stain on the foot rim.
Here is the link:
Can I get a picture of the foot. It looks like a 18th century foot but I can’t see the V angle well enough. Rendering was sometime messy on these.
@lotusblack Should she scrub the rim first or does it not matter, Peter usually wants to see a clean rim? The existing foot photo expands well for me, or do you mean you need to see it looking straight down upon it? Does the v apply to Japanese as well as Chinese?
@sharonp I’m looking for this angle.
I’m not convinced on 18th century but if it shaped this way worth looking into it further.
@lotusblack Thank you, so the outside of the rim slopes inward to form the leg of a V on each side, that explains why I could never see a v on the actual rims. The demo is helpful.
Here are some photos of the foot, the V shape is not as pronounced as the one @lotusblack sent. And thank you @sharonp , the example you sent is helpful too. I appreciate you both for taking the time to explain it to me. This is so interesting to learn about.
I think this is ok for early to Mid 19th century. My foot is 17th century as time progresses so did the foot by the 20th century it was pretty much gone to just a sloped foot with no edge at all.
That is a handy thing to know about the v on the base. Thanks again @lotusblack
