Hello Mark

Please may I ask for your help regarding this fairly modern necklace. I believe that the 76 beads are jade rather than glass, as they are very cold to the touch and several of the beads appear to have natural looking flaws in the stone. I think that the beads may be jadeite, but I am not sure due to the flaws.

@Jeremy,

It's difficult to determine by way of the pictures. Could be jade or highly probable to be serpentine/bowenite.

Bowenite will often be highly translucent in areas with blotchy white patches. Often sold as jade.

Quality is low to medium.

Hello Mark

I have been searching for examples of translucent bowenite beads, but the beads on the necklace have fine dark green strands throughout the stone and I have not been able to find any similar bowenite beads. I have struggled to photograph these green strands, but below is a close up.

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for the additional pictures.

Not bowenite.

Sometimes it's nearly impossible to determine what the material is by way of images. Oddly there appears to be a strange circle in some of the beads. Not sure what to make of it. Is that in all of them or only some?

Are you positive they are not glass? Glass can feel cold etc etc. Hold them up to a strong light and check for bubbles. You may need a loupe.

They could be genuine jade. Would need to be examined.

Sorry I can't be of more help here.

Mark

@imperialfinegems

Sorry Mark for the strange looking circles, I photographed them under a table lamp and the circles are a reflection of the bulb!

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@imperialfinegems

Thank you Mark for your suggestion of checking for bubbles. I have checked the beads using a 30x loupe with the same table lamp. No bubbles at all, just the extremely fine darker green strands and flaws in some of the beads which look quite natural.

I guess that I will have to find friendly jeweller with means of testing the hardness.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@Jeremy,

Hi Jeremy,

I had a better look at your necklace on a 60"screen. Versus my tiny phone screen.

I think it's looking good for jadeite jade. But the quality is low to  average.

@imperialfinegems

Thank you Mark.

The necklace is a present for my wife and before giving it to her I wanted to try and make sure that it may be jadeite so that I did not incorrectly tell her what the beads are. Due to the flaws I had guessed that beads were not high quality and it is a necklace that I hope she will enjoy wearing every day.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Your necklace is not jade.  It is adventurine.  Adventurine is fine-grained quartz, with tiny specks of green chrome-rich mica (fuchsite) in it.  It is common and not expensive.  If you google adventurine, you will find many examples.  The material varies a lot, but examples like yours are not uncommon.  Here are a couple of links:

Thank you Charles for your help. I have not given it to my wife yet, so I will be able to tell her what type of stone it is when I do.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

I think Brian is correct here (Aventurine). I don't know why I didn't see it before. My eyes are getting old.... 👀😂

On reflection your necklace has that distinctive look about them. You can Google and read about them. Often sold as Indian jade.

A specific gravity test will confirm either way.

Sorry Jeremy,

Mark

Thank you Mark. Although it would have been nice to tell my wife that it was a jadeite necklace, I purchased it for her so that she can wear it at any time without worrying about wearing it.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

I'm not sure if it's aventurine. If it is it should have aventurescence. But there are other green variants of quartz like prasiolite for example.
