I think the jade looks a shade darker than seen in the photos, but the carving looks okay I guess. A comfortable pebble to hold in the hand...Republic?
Hi John,
A most delightful looking carving you have posted.
Based on the intricately carved feathers, eyes, beak, lotus stem and feet I believe yours is a 20th century carving. I don't think it's republican period but later. However that being said I can't rule it out completely as I don't have any to compare to. It's I believe a combination of styling from both (but not excluding other) the Ming and Qing period.
In particular as to why I think it's 20th century rather than earlier is the way the feathers are depicted. But that's just my opinion. Others may have different thoughts.
These interpretations were and are still very popular with collectors. There are many fine examples you can compare yours to. Including the Robert Youngman collection sold at sotheby's.
I would also perform a specific gravity test to confirm the material as it's inconclusive by way of your images.
It looks like it fits very nicely into one hand with a wonderful hue. Which may further enhance your belief of a early/mid 20th century.
Did you buy/other this as a 20th century jade carving?
Mark
@imperialfinegems $100... I figured that was a very safe bet.
@imperialfinegems I wish it was mine. Maybe you are mystically sensing that I am about to acquire a great jade. I'll be extra attuned to that possibility as I go searching this weekend. Cheers! John
Hi John,
I hope you can buy one like the one posted by @Greeno107.
It's a nice example.
To put the crane into a specific time period is unfortunately not like porcelain.
Some jades can be classified as republican period. But most are simply described as 20th century. Problematic as the styling is that of earlier periods. The only clue are the way the feathers are carved. One needs to carefully examine the tooling as post 1950's were carved with modern drilling. In addition to carefully examine the beak and stem in it's mouth. Older ones (Ming/Qing) tend to show good detailing. Later ones not do much. Possibly due to time restrictions by the modern day carver.
One aspect to be noted are perfect curves. This means in high probability that it's a modern carving as perfect curves using the old tooling are nearly impossible to perform.
Regards,
Mark
Could be Qing IMHO. In this example from Sotheby's the feathers are carved in a similar manner.
@imperialfinegems Did you see the result on the iGavel crane and peach jade piece?

$2800 including premium!
That one is better and older than mine, but it gives me some idea of what it could be worth.
The best piece of jade in the iGavel sale turned out to be my favorite, too, the yellow jade water coupe with rams... $121,000 with premium!
That's a lot of $$$ for a small piece of jade!
https://bid.igavelauctions.com/Bidding.taf?_function=detail&auction_uid1=6104866
Thank you my friend for posting the results. I had completely forgot about them!
The two you posted are real beauties. Igavel auction get some great pieces with low estimates to entice buyers. The crane sold for about market value give or take a little bit. Very popular carving style.
Good jades are highly sought after and expensive etc.
You can still buy bargains out there. My friend in Sweden with my help secured a delightful Jin-Yuan jade egret finial for about 15 cents on the dollar. It skipped through the cracks.
Next May (or thereabouts) I am auctioning off most of my collection of jades. We are still negotiating the estimates etc etc.
Regards,
Mark
You can find very nice jades even for bargains sometimes. Here's an old jadeite brooch I'm looking. I'll probably not bid on it but will try to keep an eye with it to see how much it goes for.
@imperialfinegems Which auction house will you be working with?
Hi John,
Artvisory gallery located in Melbourne Australia
They have had a few asian art sales. Have a excellent team including Luke Guan ex christies NY.
I think the sale will be sometime in May. I have included jades from the yuan through to republican period.

Hi Avatar,
A nice jadeite jade brooch you have chosen to share with us.
Should be interesting to see how much it sells for. Looks to be early 20th century. Will you let us know how much it sells for?
That mountain l/boulder was also interesting. But I don't think it's early as they alluded. It looks much later imo. Especially the way the leaves have been depicted. The figures look much later. It's difficult to determine by way of the pictures either way.
As you know and it's clearly defined in the jadeite brooch the lines within the leaves themselves often were done in the early 20th century. And not so in the earlier examples.
Lark Mason (Antiques roadshow) from igavel has in the past explained this identification process.
Mark
The jade mountain could later indeed like Yuan-Ming. But it couls also be a little earlier like Song dynasty. Jin dynasty would be a traditional datng for such a thing. I'll try too look after the jade brooch and hope I won.t lose track of it.
