I hope everyone is doing well. I normally don't like posting something I haven't bought yet, but this is near me and I'm really curious what you all think about it, also with age, if possible. To me, the front designs look Chinese, but then the back looks Japanese to me. Here's some photos:

This plate is a bit of a dilemma in my opinion.
I believe it is Chinese imari and not Japanese. I also believe it is a modern interpretation. Even though there are spur marks on the back. I believe these are made to deceive the buyer into thinking it is old.
The overall look is a bit stiff looking. The characters look chinese not Japanese.
Just my thoughts..... 🙄

Interesting, Mark. I see your rational but I don’t think its likely to be modern. I do think its an unusual Japanese dish, due to the Chinese stylings. But I’ve never seen a convincing copy of a Meiji (or slightly later) charger. I think because it wouldn’t be monetarily worth the effort to reproduce this type so well. Doesn’t add up for me.

No problem at all my friend. I was actually a little reluctant to post an opinion on this because I was not sure if it was Japanese or Chinese. It certainly looks Japanese by all accounts.
I just thought it was possibly a chinese interpretation. But I could be very wrong on this! 🙏😁

Thank you Todd and Mark! I appreciate the back and forth conversation on this. It left me with some reservations, but I think I might go for it. I'm glad that it wasn't just me that thought it might be Chinese. I stared at it a bit more (or maybe a bit longer than a bit more), and I noticed a very difficult-to-see blind mark! I can't really tell what it is since the photos are so blurry, but to me, it looks like the pure water company mark.

John, I think you are correct. There is this one on ebay, with a more common Japanese flavor. The back is a good match. It is a “buy it now”, at a reasonable price, to give you an idea. The dish you posted is more uncommon though. How much this would increase the value, I don’t know.

I stand corrected on this charger. It's 100% Japanese. It's probably from the late Meiji to very early Taisho period. In the style and manner of chinese imari. It's very nice!
It's interesting to note that after the demise of the pure water company a number of blanks were sold/other to other kilns. I believe this is probably one of them. Although I am not sure.
The one on eBay is a beautiful example. It's big and in my opinion it's very reasonably priced.

I had a very disappointing evening regarding this charger. I left a bid on it without realizing I had not registered to bid, as I'm usually automatically registered with them since I buy something every week or so. Only realized after they closed, before this lot ended. I watched as it ended up selling at $45. To make matters worse, I did not read the description thoroughly, and saw it was actually an 18 inch diameter!
Oh, sorry John. 18”, that is quite a charger. Something else always comes along, no worries 😉
