Hi Everyone,
I apologise if I am taking up too much of members time with my questions and inquiries. I do have an interesting question though i must ask.
Is this plate a very good copy of a 17th century plate. I have watched and watched all of Peters lectures and I have compared this to other 17th century plates, and it does have the same style and design as those other genuine plates. The rocks and the figures do seem to be the same design. I can't say to it's overall quality but if this is a copy then it has been exceptionally well done in my opinion. There is no signature. It is 12 inches in diameter. Has anyone encountered antique fakes and by 'antique fake' i mean one that was faked 150 years ago. Please give me your opinion on this plate.
Thank you
Please can anyone agree this a Wanli Origional or from that time.
Very nice plate, in good condition it seems, ....from the footrim and the decoration on the base, and shape of the dish this looks like a C19th piece. I am sure on Peter's videos there are several plates very similar to this , with grassy or bamboo leaf decoration on the reverse, and the typical biscuity rounded footrim. The footrims on C17th and C18th tend to be much finer and whiter.
C19th plates tended to be more thickly potted than earlier ones,.

Hi,
It is a nice plate but I don't think it is wanli. The base doesn't look right and also I think the border around the edge is disproportionate to the central decoration, it looks unbalanced.
The decoration around the border (the little blue blobs - leaves?) and the rather fritted edges remind me of a 19th c Kangxi-style vase I had. I think there are also cups on this site with a similar pattern.
Best wishes,
Julia

Thank you so much. With this plate i am stuck as the highest bidder, and will undoubtedly be stuck with it. I had thought the design was very reminiscent of the Wanli style and decided to take a chance, but I mistakenly put a higher max bid on top of my winning bid. So unless someone who also thinks its a wanli like me comes along ...then i guess I am the bag holder on this one.
I really have to knuckle down and research and learn more. It shall join my ever growing and expensive learning curve collection.
Why not buy it and keep it? Kangxi revival pieces are also collectable if they are undamaged and this is a nice typical example.
Birgit
Hi Shini,
I was going to buy it, but was worried that I factored in the Wanli aspect in my price, however in the end after holding it for 2 days at my price in the last 10 seconds of the auction. 2 bidders ( I assume software bidders) fought for it and it sold for £41. Which makes me wonder what it was that made them go that high in price.
In fact I feel a slight relief as i do not like buying something that is advertised as something better than what it might be, maybe it was a real wanli and or the copy of from a well known artist.
If £41 is a good price for a Kangxi revival then i missed out 🙂 I thought the artist was very good and that is why i was so interested in that item. I wouldn't have gone £41 simply because i do not know enough about this plate.
In the end i am slightly happier it was snatched up, as I am not a huge fan of buying something that is advertised as something of greater value that may be something of lesser value. In the end £41 is alot and it might have actually been a wanli or a copy from an artist that is well renowned. It is a mystery.
Hi,
I think it is a nice plate and that was a reasonable price for such a large one.
Was it actually advertised as Wanli? If so, you may have been able to get your money back, but it would have been a pain trying!
Best wishes,
Julia
Hello short
If your not sure about apiece it best to walk away. Was this on eBay if it was always check peter ebay
listing to see if it there if it not then there are questions about it. John
Hi Short Dong,
Agree with the post and sentiments therein form John.
Just to add if it was on ebay, you can always ask peter for a 2nd opinion, but allow at least a few days for his reply.
Mark
£41 is something of a bargain for this kind of C19th plate! wanli would have been much more expensive. Of course, condition is all, and I can't see clearly from the photos whether there was damage.

some pieces on peter's list may not be right. i am not familiar with porcelain in which i believe peter is an expert. a recent featured jade buddha statue was sold for over $30k. apparently that was a jadeite, not celadon jade. not a high quality jadeite. just my own opinion. -jim
i am trying to learn porcelain here, thanks to peter. he is a great guy in porcelain. -jim
Hi Jim980,
I take it that the statue you are posting about is the one on a lotus leave stand.
It sold for a large sum of money.
Nicely carved but not that old.
Out of interest what makes you think it was jadeite jade?
Mark
mark: right, that's the piece. it's jadeite. -jim
