I assume this is what's called a ginger jar... although I can not imagine it has ever held any ginger or food for that matter. I also guess it is late 19th century and not as per it's mark. The height is roughly 30cm / 12 inches so it has a good look about it. I am not sure if the lid is original as it is far too big but the decoration is fairly similar.
As ever I would love to know anything anyone can tell me about this jar. - For example were they made solely for export and when was this type of enamel/colours first used.
Many thanks in advance.
The mark is Qianlong Nian Zhi which is Qianlong period made your ginger jar is early 20th century to mid 20th century made
Many thanks John steward - I though it might have been a little earlier, but knew it wasn't from the Qianlong period.
I have been unable to find an early/genuine Qianlong example of this type on the web... Any ideas?
Look at www.earlyming.com it j.p.O'brian sight
Thanks John for the web link
Gotheborg.com has your mark under later Chinese mark your mark can go early you my want to look
Once again, many thanks John - Gotheborg.com really does list a lot of the more recent marks; an excellent reference.
Your welcome that what we here for
The flower in the jar is called “xi pan lian”, or lotus flower from west. Many believe that it is a make-up flower. The flower was popular in Qianlong period, but this jar was made in a late period, around the middle of the century. It is called Jinger jar but has no thing to do with Jinger. In Chinese, they are called “Jiang Jun Guan” (General jar), for their bodies look like a General’ stomach. They were made to store food, such as bean, tea, sugar, salt, etc.
Thanks,
Charles

Here is great site for Asian art ,searchcollection.asianart.org you can date or material or period it is avery brundage collection.
I was very interested to read that these jars are known in China as “Jiang Jun Guan” (General jar). I thought Charles was going to say that they are called 'General' jars because they were used for general food items (ie. any dry food items), not because of a general's belly!
Do you think the translated English word's double meaning is a coincidence?
Charles - Another question... When you said: "The flower was popular in Qianlong period, but this jar was made in a late period, around the middle of the century." - Did you mean the 1950's or 1850's ?
Thanks.
Lewis, as I see the photos, I think it was made in 1950-60.
Thanks,
Charles
Cj
Sorry, I did not describe it clearly. “Jiang Jun Guan” means “Army General jar”. The shape of the jar is like the body of an army General with big stomach. But the jar is designed for storage use.

Many thanks Charles for clearing all that up ? - now I know!
