I don't think I have seen Imari done in this pattern and I'm wondering if any of you all have seen it somewhere? The design seems very elegant and finely done and the use of negative space is rather striking. Curious to hear others thoughts. Cheers! John
Nabeshima styled.
I like the design.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Thanks for the lead. I'm not experienced in those wares so this will be a good learning experience. There are actually five of them and they came in an old wooden box.
I agree with Mark in the style of Nabeshima wares. It’s very nice copy.
So after doing a little research it seems Nabeshima wares were officially made into the late 19th c. The offshoots of the family kiln have continued to this day. Since I haven't handled any before I'm not sure what to expect from these types but in general I feel like these have a late 19th to early 20th look and feel. The box looks fairly old. Here is an area of the top with some writing. Perhaps it includes a date that someone can identify. At any rate, I think I'll have Peter take a look as well.
Nabeshima & Kakiemon style mix. Beautiful dish. Not sure about 19c..I think this is 20c dish.
Please let us know what Peter says, a set of five, lovely.
@johnshoe If these are 19th century there should be a comparison since this style is well documented. I’ll look in some books tomorrow to see if I find anything.
I want to be wrong on this.
But I don't see how possibly they can be 19c. I have doubts, because 19c, would be better painted pattern quality.
And main factor to me, what makes me think they are 20c - blue top rim painted pattern quality, sadly pictures can't be zoomed in, but looks like that top rim pattern done in vintage manner.
My fingers are crossed for John - that's antique set if so, this would be an excellent catch. I can't wait, for the outcome on them..Love Japanese porcelain...
I agree these are copies of the old Nabeshima wares that were in Kakiemon colours/style. Are all 5 identical?
I suspect 20th c as I agree with Lucky about the rim decoration which looks out of place, however I would like to see the set to be sure.
The rim shape stands out to me as not of the normal form of Nabeshima.... a beautiful dish but I think either late 19th century hirado or a 20th century copy. Personally I think its a stunner...
Hey John whats the diameter? Nabeshima plates are done in 3(rarely), 5, 7, and 9 sun, roughly 2.8cm per "sun".
Jeremy
So far I can remember, Nabeshima's they were made in sets of 5 mainly. John's dish center, replicates 17/18c Kakiemon style as example below;
In a past, I did browsed many Nabeshima's online, everywhere, museums, major auction house, you name it, I was there (not everywhere) - but in many different places places...
I never did seen such a Nabeshima dish, with Kakiemon style center. This shouldn't be here (in my personal opinion).
If to think logically - if this supposed to be Meiji porcelain - would "they" be mixing 2 styles together>> Kakiemon & Nabeshima? I don't think so, that they would be allowed to breach Nabeshima's making standards (unless this is some sort special & unique order).
John's dish (or dishes) pretends to be Nabeshima instead of Kakiemon, this is obvious.
Many clues which doesn't fit here this dish to be Nabeshima & definitely this is not Kakiemon.
I found Taisho period Nabeshima with similar top rim pattern - in my eyes, quality is "behind" on John's dish. Same applies in regards to outside pattern...

This thread is super interesting to me, I can't wait for the outcome - hopefully John will be kind enough to post replay on this, once all questions will be answered, what ever is there to see and to read.
🤞
@lucky I “Love Japanese porcelain” to I think some of the Hirado porcelain is the most elegant porcelain and very well potted. I have my favorite piece it’s nothing super amazing but I love it nevertheless.
