Hi ........ Hope you can help with this.
I have this vase and have no clue as to what it is other than it was a gift to grandfather in around 1890's - 1910's.
If you could help with just some basics I will take it from there.
What is the guesstimate as to the value if any of the item.
I will be interested in selling the item eventually.
Pix link attached.
Dear Saturn421,
Some aspects of the way your vase has been made suggest to me that it was made in very late in the nineteenth century, perhaps even early twentieth, and that would fit with what you already know of its history. The way the seal mark is done, and also the nature of the foot rim, strongly suggest this. You might be interested to know that shown moulded on its side is Magu, riding on a deer and carrying a basket. She was one of the Daoist Immortals, known for her association with the elixir of life.
As to your vase's value, I can't help you very much there, though the one thing I might mention is that because it's not Imperial ware, it's unlikely to hit any high notes in the sale room. Auctions are unpredictable things, and an item is only worth what two (or more) bidders are prepared to pay for it. It's a guessing game a lot of the time as to what the final result will be. I think your vase will find its level in the sale room. You could always decide on what you are prepared to let it go for, and offer it for sale with a fixed reserve to protect it, but don't set your reserve too high or you will put bidders off. A good auctioneer will advise you further on that.
I hope that helps a little,
Best wishes,
Alan
Thank you so much. I will likely put it on Ebay with a modist reserve.
Thx
John
Nice looking vase
Alan Fletcher....
Are these Vase's common...
I have looked all over and have not seen any that are the same.
Thanks Again
John
Dear John,
I agree, your vase is not a common one as far as my experience is telling me, but I'm a long way from having seen everything, especially when it comes to items produced in the late Qing to early Republic period. A very wide range of ceramics was being made during this time, and it's always possible to overlook something! However, keep searching, and you might find something similar yet. You could tell the Forum if you do.
Best wishes,
Alan
Thank you for taking the time to write Alan.
Just sent off a request to Christies for an appraisal. If it makes sense to sell it there or on this site not sure of yet but will keep in touch.
Thanks
John Ford
John,
I recently watched one Peter's videos on Chinese fakes. As he was going through the authentic pieces I saw a vase with the same neck and embellishment on the inside just like yours. Peter remarked that it was unusual and that he hadn't seen it before. Unfortunately I don't remember the type or age of vase, however, if you watch the video (I believe it was somewhere in the middle of the 47 minute video) you might get another clue. Hope that helps!

Jon
Hi,
I remember that one, too. I think it was more colourful. Peter certainly commented about how unusual it was. Was it about 3 or 4 weeks ago, it did reasonably well on ebay.
Best wishes,
Julia
Howdy Jon
Did you have the link to Peters video, I looked and could not find the right one.
Thanks

yes I agree , this has a typical late C19th foot, and base , the relief work is unusual and looks to be very well-done.
I believe, this type of export piece is not something Christies will sell , it's 'below their threshold ', but they might give you an appraisal.
If it's in good condition and is a good size I would imagine maybe £150-200 (?), the dark and slightly dull colour might hold it back , but some people may love the subject matter.

Howdy All.... I'm going to post this on Ebay soon...any advice as to where I should list it, categories? I will put alink here as soon as I finish the listing.
John
Here is my listing for the old vase I have
Thank you all for the help with this
Very unusual to my eye. I also remember one from a Peter video, but much longer ago. I seem to remember carnival figures and it being colorful. And the decorations on the inside of the rim I think I remember Peter commenting on as unusual. I think its great.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
