I bought this very large portrait painting today. Can anyone help with an artist ID from the mark? It’s otherwise unsigned, but the face is rendered carefully, while the clothing and flowers have a striking traditional manner with brightly contrasting colors.

@imperialfinegems Maybe right on the Japanese origin. The background is rubbed in gold dust.

Seal script is hard to read since it's formed with art. Very pretty painting. It's a traditional portrait with Gongbi style.

the seal seems glued upon, is that normal? curious to know
in medieval munuscripts, the ones that are gilded in gold leaf have less value than gold painted, because it requires more material (just remembered to refer that 🙂 because you mentioned the background )
@lep I see what you mean by the photo of the seal almost looking like it was a square piece glued onto the painting. I looked the best I could and tried to photograph it better, but it's hard since the painting is behind glass.
To the best of what I can tell, the border of the seal seems to be enhanced due to the application of gold to the background, so the seal looks like it is floating on top. However, I'm fairly certain the seal has been applied to the same paper as the rest of the painting.
So the conclusion is Chinese, any idea when it was painted?
May I also ask if that is water staining on her hair at the back of her neck or has it been touched up? It may simply be a reflection.
I noticed it because I thought the collar is odd, the way it interacts with her hair looks unnatural or maybe the high collars were split at the back? I don't know anything about fashions.
However, as that keeps catching my eye now, I also keep noticing the mark, so I thought I would ask about it. 😊
@julia Some of the spots are reflection on the glass. I do see some fine flecks of gold in her hair...might be accidental.
I'm also unfamiliar with fashion, but it looks like an up-turned collar, so the floral pattern runs along the collar bone, and so would the pattern on the collar of the robe if it lay flat...but it is pulled up to cover the neck (right up to her hair)...modesty?
the final conclusion is that is a modern fake.... but I'm available to take it out of your hands for some money... 🤣 😆

@greeno107 the seal has the same shadow cast as the frame on the painting.. so it most probably glued upon it. but...what does that tell us?
Thanks, Tim. My issue with the collar is the way her hair seems to be behind it, whereas it shouldn't be if the collar goes all around her neck. There wouldn't be a sharp corner cutting across and hiding the hair growth, unless that is a split in the back so her hair can go behind it.
The mark looks like a drip that has run a bit, it is lighter than the rest of her hair. Looks rather like when one is doing a water-colour and a drip falls onto a painted part and lightens the intensity of the colour. Maybe it is just me seeing things. 😊
