This is the item here and it listed as an antique, and I do see alot of similar items and I wonder should I take it. The Item bid to $38 and i can get it substantially cheaper with my second chance. Seller has 100% feedback and large feedback score over 4000. Does anyone see this as a 20th century reproduction. The base reminds me of something Peter Said in his videos about the consistency of the burn on the base, and this looks like it may not be genuine burn.
Item Description;
Antique Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Figures Vase Urn Bowl Pair Huge Signed (7.5 inched x 7.25 inches)
Age: 1850-1899 Primary Material : Porcelain/pottery Original/Repro: Antique original Sub Type: Famille Rose
Hi, this is a Japanese vase, not Chinese. Someone might know more about it .
Birgit
Ha Ha
If this is Japanese then how can i be sure it is Antique. However the price i got in second chance is only £22 incl postage. Which is about $30. That is $15 per urn/vase incl postage which is still relatively good value. I guess I am trying to justifying paying this money, if there was a chance they were antique it would be a worthwhile risk.
Do you think they are even porcelain?
Hello Short
I agree there Japanese 20thc early to mid. They are not Chinese
from the time stated by seller. Just my thoughts John
Hi Short Dong, they are porcelain and as John has stated date from early 20th century to mid based on said pictures, and are not Chinese, but Japanese.
For the price (inc P&H) OK especially if you like them.
Mark
Hi,
I would also say to only buy them if you really want them for yourself. There is a lot of this type of Japanese ware and as you can tell from the price, they are not in great demand.
Best wishes,
Julia
It is astonishing how even experienced sellers (4000 feedbacks) can‘t see the difference between Japanese and Chinese. Sometimes it’s difficult to see, as we experienced in the forum, but sometimes quite obvious. The Chinese antiques section at Ebay is full of Japanese stuff. On the other hand, if you collect Chinese porcelain it‘s always a good idea to search in Ebay’s Japanese antiques for some overlooked pieces.
Birgit
In my opinion these are Chinese porcelain, roughly imitating Japanese style. The details and enamels are all wrong for being Japanese. I guess they date to the late 20th c.

That is interesting because a few years ago, I picked up a pair of bottle vases that didn't sell at an auction. They had been described as Chinese, but I thought they were Japanese. I have made a couple of quick photos for comparison. Looking at them again, I still feel mine are some kind of turn of the 20th c satsuma but whilst the style is similar to the jars there are differences such as the lack of crackle, the gold is more brassy, the colours quite modern. Maybe Mat is right?
Or indeed maybe these are Chinese, too. I was always bothered by the gilt 14.
Hi Mats,
I have searched Google pictures for Chinese Satsuma and there are indeed a lot of similar articles, although most of them overdid it a bit with the gold application compared to Short Dong's vases. Japanese Satsuma in comparison seems to look more refined. So you may be right about the Chinese. I didn't know before they produced such an amount of Japanese copies. But of course this makes the age 1850-1899 the seller gives even more unlikely. As Julia said, dear Short Dong, don't buy it unless you like it very much.
Birgit
Notice both pieces have a “Made in China” mark on the base. Could these be Chinese imitations in the Japanese style?
Everyone ..thank you very much. So from the discussion these pieces are 2oth Century Japanese Satsuma but possibly double agents posing as Japanese but in fact Chinese.
I have seen a similar pair before at somebody's house, it might sound odd but they said that they bought them at a '£1 shop' a few years back.
Best wishes.
