I purchased a large porcelain plaque it was not expensive. The owner told me his father bought it in 1945. But we all know these stories can be false. I have a hard time with these because quality all over the place. Can anyone tell me if signed and dated. It’s 36 inches tall
Hi Brian,
The images are not very clear. They blur when enlarged.
In my opinion based on the images I think it's highly probable to be circa 80's rather than 1945. It may be dated.
The faces look half baked. Which was a common theme/style in the 80's. The overall quality in my estimation is average.
As noted by you buying republican plaques is very difficult at the moment with some very high quality attributes. Some I have seen are better than the masters.
It's important to try if you can to see the back. This is obviously not always possible.
Failing that is to carefully examine the surface of the plaques in order to try and see if it's a wood kiln or gas fired. My understanding is that all Republican porcelain would have been fired in a wood oven. Gas kilns started to be used early on in the PROC. Too muddy the waters artists are now reverting back to the wood.

@imperialfinegems Thanks Mark what would the back look like on a Republic piece. I did get a look at the back not sure what to look for. When you say wood fired how do you spot this feature? As for dating I felt same way but It was cheap.
Hi Brian,
The back of republican should show signs of the flakes from the wood or kindle that lands on on object. It should also have two dividers on the back. In other words it will a little rough with your fingers. Whereas the gas fired is perfect. No flakes or kindle landing on the plaques. Perfect even temperature.
Unfortunately I can't show any of my plaques reverse as they are currently going to be auctioned in August.
Here is one. This is marked He Xuren and dated in the 30's. It's not by him and is probably done in the 60's. It also exceptionally heavy.
This is a genuine republican period plaques by Master Xu Zhongnan. I don't know if you can see the surface or not.
This is another one similar to mine that was sold at sotheby's.
Of course some high quality republican pieces were exceptionally high quality and difficult to see any evidence of wood fired.
It's difficult to explain it to you my friend. Wood fired has a very different look and feel to it when compared to gas fired kilns.
Carefully examine the facial detail along with the clothing style. Most copies or attributes tend to be plain and dead looking. Painted quickly for maximum profit. Of course this is only a guide. There are always exceptions.
Also watch or look at the weight. Heavy pieces are more likely to be later.
Mark
I’ve added a better resolution picture. The back of mine had two lines running vertically it’s not cut even and very bumpy finish on the front. As you mentioned average paint quality
Hi Brian,
See the half baked faces on some of the images.
Notice the bubbly glaze!
The images look OK from a distance. But notice how stiff they look when compared.
This would I suggest also be very heavy.
Mark
@imperialfinegems when you say half baked your talking about the orange right?
Nothing make me feel this was 1945. I thought the flowers were a little bright. The whole plaque seems bright. But at a few bucks I can alway pass it on as modern decor and leave it at that. A lot of members seem to not understand that today in our housing market in the US decor brings good money also. I can pay $25 bucks and sell it for $200 it might not seem like much but I make extra $1000 month doing this. Spending money for bigger items.
I forgot to mention congratulations on your upcoming auction. I also have a piece in a upcoming auction maybe we will both make big bucks.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with modern pieces. A lot of the younger generation prefer new to old. Especially with jades. I have seen many Chinese buyers paying premium prices for new carvings. Even some 80's porcelain of excellent quality is selling in China for very good money.
I hope your sale goes well for you. I also consigned some Bruce Lee owned equipment to julien's auction. The prices of late are ridiculously high.
Are you keeping that bowl you once posted and or did sothebys/other get back to you etc?
Regards,
Mark
@imperialfinegems the bowl is being auctioned by Sotheby’s in September. They have it already. it was looked at by Sotheby’s Hong Kong and Sotheby’s New York.
They had an exact match in Hong Kong with strong providence they were the one to tell me about the Hong Kong bowl.
How did you ever get your hands on Bruce Lee equipment?
I bought the equipment from a collector in the UK who fell on hard times about 5 years ago. Certified by his student and friend the late Taky Kimura.
It was on eBay after being on consignment with a colleague in the UK.
I think you will do very well on that bowl. Since sothebys have consigned it must be genuine. It's a superb and rare find.
You should be overwhelmed my friend.
Mark
To me the faces have a 1960s look.
Birgit
@shinigami thanks Birgit I don’t have Tommy’s face book to compare need to get one. To help with dates
I am sure regardless of age that you will be able to turn it over for a good profit. You have a very good eye.
I would highly recommend a Tommy's, book along with Simon Kwan book on republican masters. But it's a expensive book unless you go directly to the book seller in Hong Kong. Which I would highly recommend as the stocks are low from my understanding.
