Dear forum member,
I just received a Guan Yao bowl which I have bought from Catawiki. It is about 13 cm in diameter and 3.5 cm in height.
Please help to comment and advice the age and whether is Guan Yao or Ge Yao.
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Yiow
Hi Yiow,
Can you provide a link to the Catawiki auction?
Thanks, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hi Todd,
Below is the link to the catawiki.
Thanks.
regards,
Yiow
It's a nice bowl in a somewhat unusual shape. I don't think it's new but I think that it's probably made in one of the longquan kilns and not an 'official' kiln like the name guan yao suggest. So guan-type rather than true guan ware ...
Dear all,
Is it possible to be a Qing or Republic made Guan-type ware ?
Thanks.
regards,
Yiow
I don't know. I would have suggested Qing dynasty 18th-19th century but then I came across the sale of a similar bowl dated 17th-18th century. I think it's a good buy at $200, especially if it's a late Ming piece. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/chinese-guan-ware-bowl-guanyao-428010507
Dear Yiow,
your bowl is Ge type, not Guan type.
Bear in mind that the original ones from Song dynasty are very rare, and expensive.
I would like to ask Catawiki why your one should be dated to the 18th century. Why? I do not see the reason.
The excessive grit on the foot, type of foot and the conditions of the bubbles and crazing are pointing to a not so old date IMO.
Regards,
Giovanni
I've found a few more examples that compares well with the shape, glaze and base. One at Rob Michiels Auctions described as longquan celadon and dated to the Ming dynasty. https://www.rm-auctions.com/en/asian-arts-october-2017/8733-a-chinese-monochrome-dark-longquan-celadon-bowl-ming And two examples (probably wronfully) dated to the Qing dynasty. https://www.brunkauctions.com/lot/longquan-celadon-crackle-glaze-bowl-3266911 https://www.trocadero.com/stores/sebastian/items/1368561/Chinese-Qing-Dynasty-Crackled-Glaze-Celadon-Bowl Based on the shape I would also say it that it likely dates to the late Ming dynasty but it could possibly also be made in the early Qing dynasty. Either way it seems to me you have purchased an authentic piece at a good price. Congratulations!
Dear all,
Thank you so much for sharing your views. I agree it is unlikely a Guan-type celadon ware.
I have someone told me on today that it looks like a Ming Ge-Yao too. I have see & touch a LongQuan Yao bowl quite similar to this on this afternoon but the Longquan piece does have a lighter green with a fish molded in the centre and it doesn't has crackle.
I am very happy to purchase it for 200 Euro.
Shine,
The bowl has very thick "body" which light cannot pass through.
Best regards,
Yiow
Thank you Yiow.
Frankly I am surprised that a Catawiki expert cannot tell the difference between Porcelain and Stoneware/Earthenware.
Personally I don’t see this as Ming, rather much much later an£ probably late 20th c.
Vic
Below early Ming Longquan.
Intentionally stained crackles and secondary unstained crackle.
Dera Yiow,
what do you mean by saying that you have handled a Longquan one which looks different, and you are happy of having paid it 200 euro? Which is your conclusion about its age?
Giovanni
It’s neither Guan nor Ge. It’s a Longquan ware and it’s an old one. There are lots of grits on the foot rim, which is typical of 17th century, i.e. the transitional period (very late Ming or very early Qing). Longquan kilns are quite complicated though, spreading over many areas in Zhejiang as well as Fujian Provinces. Longquan wares with the typical gray paste usually are considered the more desirable “mainstream” Longquan. Regarding to your bowl, the foot rim was trimmed quite casually and the paste on the foot rim looks white instead of grey. Maybe it was made in a small provincial kiln near Fujian?
Giovanni,
What I meant was I have seen a few LongQuan ware (please see attached)on yesterday afternoon and they are not really like the one which I have bought. Whether the item I bought is real or reproduction, I am pretty happy with the price which I have paid because this is my first item bought from Catawiki.
As for the age, frankly I do not know, hence I am asking fellow members and also some friends who have interest in the Chinese antique. I am very new to antique collection thus I hope to learn from all the experts.
Thanks.
regards,
Yiow
