Hey Folks,

So I bought this locally a few weeks ago but didn't get it in my hands until yesterday, so I have had a bit to kinda guess how bad the damage was under the "restoration" and try and date it from the pics.

I do not have a whole lot of experience with these wares, outside of dealing with japanese used Korean tea bowls.  From my research I am guessing this is 1200-1300s, and probably excavated in SE Asia, definitely been in the ground though.

One of the most interesting features to me is the swiftly carved leaves on the flower stems, rather that the stylized leaves seen on the majority, as well as the differences in color choices between the panels.  This is not something I can really find examples of so far, or at least I am not seeing that.

I guess SE Asian recovered due to the repairs, a silicone based rubbery adhesive and plaster fills... and a copper rim replacement. Green paint globbed in the cracks.  I have removed most of this, and honestly it looks so much better with just holes in the sides for now.

Winter project will be taking it apart and do it up properly.

Curious if anyone has any experience with these, or has an intact one... or some ideas on it?

Absolutely thrilled to have it, as it seems fairly uncommon to me at least, even with it being in awful shape.

Cheers,

Jeremy

currently about 29cm so probably about 34-36 originally.

@jbeer2121 I like the Vase, you can see how the Korean Kilns tried to emulate the chinese ones but also they incorporate a japanese style with the Chrysanthemum from Japan. I think it reflects the influence that trading inbetween those Kingdoms had.  👍

with Best Regards...
Carsten

Jeremy, I love that, it is lovely and I know many won't agree, but the damage almost makes it more beautiful.

When you take it apart, please would you post a fragment where a crack cuts through the inlay? I would like to see how it looks.

@jbeer2121

Hi Jeremy -

Lovely vase, and certainly worthy of restoration ...

This compositional design with such 'carved leaves' is a known type on such Korean pieces ...

Will go through my library/database and see if I can trace similar examples ...

The design looks painted on, not inlaid. According to a book on Korean art I have this technique is called T'oehwa ch'ongja and was used mainly in the 12th century.

@julia  I too would enjoy seeing any inlaid shard, as I can't tell the difference from online photos.

@shinigami I was looking up T'oehwa ch'ongja  because I have a piece that I may use this technique I wanted to look into. Came across this .pdf book on Buncheong Ceramics:

https://resources.metmuseum.org/resources/metpublications/pdf/Korean_Buncheong_Ceramics_from_Leeum_Samsung_Museum_of_Art.pdf

@jbeer2121 some interesting information but here's one screenshot I thought applicable to your piece:

Screenshot 2023 10 10 at 10.53.01 AM

In it's original state, your piece likely had a lot more white pigment.  It's a beautiful piece, thank you for sharing

Hey Everyone,

I am sorry it took me so long to respond to this.  I really appreciate all the positive feedback.

I am definitely planning on a restoration, I think this is a bit beyond me, even though it would look fantastic in my opinion with a lacquer repair, I think it probably should be done with conservation level materials and cleaned properly as it is excavated.... I dunno for now I just have made sure the pieces are stable.

Julia Sharon, Birgit, I was hoping to get really good pics of the cross sections, but macro shots are somewhat blurry.  Hopefully though you can see it is incised, just not particularly deep, and inlaid.  perhaps some is painted on but I think the colors extend into the paste below the glaze layer.

and Brian thank you for that great read, it actually prompted me to buy yet another broken piece of Japanese pottery that I had seen a week ago and didn't know what it was... lol.

I hope I've hit on peoples questions, and I hope the pics help clarify the type.

I have sent pics to a few experts so I will update as I learn about it.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy -

And with apologies also for taking time to reply …

Attached image/description of a wine cup and stand with similar inlaid designs, Koryo dynasty 12th-13th century …

This cup/stand was exhibited in the Oriental Ceramic Society’s 2021 Centenary Exhibition, London, and published in the catalogue, No 69, pages 204/5 …

I have had the privilege of seeing/handling several times, both have some damage, yet very beautiful …
