Dear forum members
Today I've picked up some vases. One of them are obviously Japanese Imari, nicely painted but I'm not sure of the age.
Another pair seems to have Chinese style 6 character mark, Fake?
Thank you.
Hi Spartacus,
The Japanese vase is very nice. Beautiful design and would date IMO to early 20th Century .Nice buy.
The other pair of garlic style Chinese vases are IMO modern. Terrible looking overall with poorly executed and hastily finished. If I were you I would try to turn over this pair and keep the other.
You seem to be able to score unusual items on a regular basis. All bought in Thailand? Are you Thai or other, if I may ask?
Mark
Hello Mark
Thank you for your comments. I agree the pair of vases does not look good, I need to refine my taste in blue and white porcelain (luckily the cost of mistake is low so I keep trying).
Most items bought in Thailand or neighboring countries indeed. I am not Thai but Greek expat living here. With monsoon season upon us I've had time to devote more time to my newfound hobby, so I have large amount of items passing through my hands, luckily some are interesting 🙂
Best regards
Spartakos
Hi Spartakos -
Japanese is not really my area, so I would defer to Mark re dating, but a lovely vase with beautiful designs - a very nice example, IMO.
The 6 character mark on the two Chinese pieces reads 'Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi', so 'Great Qing Qianlong period(during) made' - reading 'Made during the Qianlong reign of the great Qing dynasty', the emperor who ruled China from 1736-1796. The mark is written in regular 'kaishu' script, but such marks are extremely rare, and were only used in the first few years of the reign. The mark was then replace and written in 'zhuanshu' seal form.
I would also concur with Marks thoughts - these are rather new and not particularly nice ... IMO.
Stuart
Hello Stuart
Thank you for the information. I just realized that I actually have other another japanese plate with the same mark, although that one is actually old (late Edo) and the mark is honorific. I made a mistake buying this pair, but at least it was cheap and I will have a chance to study them and hopefully not make this mistake again.
Somehow Japanese ceramics are easier for me, maybe because I've had more experience with them.
Off topic, would you please share if you know when glit satrted appearing on asian ceramics?
Best regards
Spartakos
Hi Spartakos -
I have seen a few Yuan dynasty blue monochrome wares with gilt decoration, and also some early Ming pieces, attributed to the Yongle and Xuande periods, but such pieces are exceptionally rare ...
I have not seen anything prior to the 14th century on Chinese wares, such design techniques were not part of the Song taste/style, and I can't recall seeing anything from other Asian countries prior to this date - but I could well be wrong in this ...
Stuart
Your are getting great stuff. It seems harder to get a definitive date for some Japanese Items. So maybe grab a book along the way also so that you do not end up with too much contemporary stuff.
Your doing very well wherever you are 🙂
Japanese seems safer from counterfeit which is why i sometimes prefer Japanese, but in saying that, I must admit that there is still a huge volume of Genuine decent quality Chinese Antique's on the market everyday that are quite obviously genuine and Japanese can also be faked and maybe victims of this in the future when the prices rises.
My Fukagawa arrived today. Courtesy of the generous seller it'sabeautifulday.
Very well packaged 🙂 Under £10
Dear Stuart
Thank you. I was under the impression that glit was a quiet recent thing, like 18th century. Will keep that in mind.
Dear Short Dong
That is a nice plate, seems to be a early example of Fukagawa koransha company. Recently we were discussing the relation to Fukagawa seiji on this forum.
Do you mean the slim neck Imari vase? Yes I got it, generally ceramics are sold by weight here, around 8usd per Kg, but the vase was charged extra due to it being "beautiful Chinese art" according to the seller, it cost me 13usd and the fake vases cost 7usd for the pair. Unfortunately I still have no clue as to who the maker is. Sent it for an evaluation request to Bonham's in case their specialists have an idea but they rarely reply.
Best regards

I meant to day thank you also for the explanation about Gilt on Asian Ceramics. I find what you said fascinating.
Sparkatos,
That is great value for that vase, it is a lovely vase of good quality and good condition, and you got a serious bargain. However if it is 1920's then that is now Antique so even better.
I will keep an eye out for that backmark, it is distinctive. The J shape marl at the end strikes a note. I have seen it many times. Just need to refresh my memory.
My plate i am not sure if it is all that old, but it does show that you can get japanese Ware at good prices in europe also. How on earth will you bring all of these ceramics back to the west 🙂
I can't see the mark on your plate clearly but it seems like a blue orchid, also the blue on your plate looks from the same time period as my imari vase it would make your plate a very early example of fukagawa koransha. And the prices you are scoring are great, shows how undervalued the japanese porcelain is now. Today i've picked up a pair of imari plates for 50 cents 🙂
Hi Spartakos, SD and all =
My apologise, a correction - just returned from spending the day with an old friend, an ex dealer who still collects with 40+years experience, who confirmed there are a small number of Song dynasty ceramics known which have some gilt decoration but, as with the Yuan/Ming pieces, such pieces are very rare ...

Hi Sparkatos,
I feel I paid full price for this bowl, it is not even 2 inches high and just short of 6 inches in diameter. Also the backmark is not very clear. I hope it is a koransha but I get a sense it might be mid 20th Century. I think the best deal i ever got was from babydragon but yes there are some good deals out there, there is not many people looking specifically for Fukagawa on ebay.
Better pictures.
Also Your plates that you posted, is that Backmark not mean made in Kyoto.
