One of a few nice flea market finds this weekend. This was a lamp with all its hardware mangled, termite eaten wood stand and cap, and a broken shade -so it looked like a pile of junk! Seller practically gave it to me for $5.00. Stripped it down back to a vase and can really see a nice piece of Chinese landscape artwork. A misty mountain range with a temple, a cascading waterfall, and a man floating about in his boat! It is large, 19” H. Probably a mid century made piece, i have a few other small ones possibly by the same studio/makers. I think from Taiwan. Many of the landscape paintings of the time seem influenced by the prolific artist Chang Dai-Chien. Can anyone translate the writing?
Hi Kenny,
A nice little find there.
I believe it's chinese and modern from the late 20th century or later. It's not printed from my eyes. It's been deliberate drilled to give the impression of some age (perhaps republican). Unfortunately I am unable to decipher the calligraphy.
Despite it being modern. It may be painted by a known contemporary artist. Therefore it may have some value depending on the person who made it.
Perhaps George aka gfhandle or others can assist when they visit the forum.
Mark
Kenny,
A nice landscape scene and I agree most likely from Taiwan. Each line of script describes mountains, clouds, waterfalls with a cyclical date of 1978.
George
Not deliberately drilled to give it some age. It was converted to a lamp for use in the home as Kenny mentioned it came with stand and and lamp shade when he purchased it. A nice buy at $5 for such a large vase 😀

@gfhandel thank you for the information! At some point will research, see if i can find the artist the red seal mark may belong to. Every once in awhile i see (and almost always end up acquiring) some really incredible “modern” artwork on porcelain from Taiwan studios. An undervalued category to say the least -(and that im thankful for!) One of my favorites, this ‘soft paste’ bottle vase, decorated with incredible dragon thrashing about the roiling waters! This was a $2.00 flea market find years ago...
This also from flea market this weekend, large oil on canvas (2’ x 3’) in solid wood frame. Nicely done- no signature. On back “Bought in China Dads trip 1964”. Flea Market price- $10.00! Pays to get there early with the flashlight! Id have had to pay $20.00 if another reseller in the market had bought it before me lol thats why i get there early! This painting maybe Hong Kong?
And now for the ‘piece de resistance’ flea market find this weekend, really beautiful 11” vase with stand. Exceptional artwork and colors! It is flawless. Vase- $5.00! Stand - $1.00! How dare the guy shake me down for another buck for the stand lol. I gladly gave 10.00 and told him- “keep the change”...
@surfcollector Some very decorative items, I like my example of a large Taiwan vase, but I did not get your good price, but good enough.
Writing on the vase with the prominent woman, may explain the scene. Can anyone translate?
Hi Kenny,
You have a very good eye for buying at flee markets etc. Exceptionally low prices. Well done!
The first vase with the three clawed dragon is in my opinion Korean. It's beautiful by the way.
The other one with the maidens or beauties is in opinion from early PROC. It could be late Republic but I doubt it. Birgit has the Tommy Eklof book on faces. So perhaps she will join in in due course. The faces look to me to be early PROC. So 1950's in my submission.
Thank you for comments with regard to the vase that was posted above. You state that it was not drilled for other reasons than for the intended purpose of using it as a lamp. If the date is correct. That is 1978 I find it difficult to accept that it would have been drilled. There were by that late stage plenty of vases available on the open market. So why would anyone drill a perfectly good vase?
As you know drilled vases were common during the early republic period due to the fact that there was a that time insufficient stocks to fill the orders/houses. Hence they drilled numerous vases etc.
You would also know that dealers do drill modern vases to give the impression of earlier pieces. Regardless of whether it has a cord or shade. That is irrelevant. The fakers know this and fix their new/remodeled pieces with cords and shades and try and sell them as republican period.
Regards,
Mark

I’ll have to disagree with you on this Mark. With a 1978 date and style suited to that date only, unlikely it would be drilled to make it date back to a Republic date. The fact that it was being used as a lamp prior to Kenny’s purchase makes me believe the drill was used for lamp purposes only.

@shinigami thanks it is a nice find. Id have gladly gave up to 200 for it seeing the outstanding quality of the artwork and overall perfect condition. Our flea market (swap meet) was opened back up about a month ago- and should stay opened so long as our case counts stay low. There are strict rules and guidelines both sellers and shoppers must follow. And you would be correct in saying, there are not many flea markets like ours out there! Im grateful for it!

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
