I've been looking for a good rendition of this scene for some time. Originally thought it was republic, but now believe it's 19th century, wonder what you guys make of it.

Thanks for the additional pictures Thomas. Though the piece is impressively well painted I have a bit of a doubt about it. There's a mix of hairstyles and faces that look to me like taken from different times, which is often a sign of modern production. Hopefully others can give their opinion as well and I hope I'm wrong.

IMO painting is very well executed , concerns are the unglazed foot with that spiral and the good condition of the gilding plus some white claylike enamel , maybe also the bats look more like late 19 cent
@webboy I'm not totally clued up with feet from the 19th century, but think there's a huge variety. In my uneducated opinion, If it was a modern fake I feel like the foot would be trying to be kangxi? Or pre famille rose, It Would be easier to stick a qianlong mark on, or something that would be convincing for C19, as a fake (a 6 figure kangxi mark). Seems foolish to spend so much time and effort of the characters and then undermine it with the foot.
@thomasumjohnson oh don t miss understand me i don t mean fake i mean copy recreating a style in a later period . yes the unglazed foot can be another variation of a foot but, such a high quality piece with unglazed foot is not common i found no reference.
The Age would not be my concern its such a nice piece and i am certain it would fetch a high price.
I tried to find a comparison this morning but could only find your listing. I spent so much time trying to decide when this was made that I ran out of time to actually post anything! 😊
I too have some doubts about the faces. The rather odd red shading did initially make me think Republic, but it is also reminiscent of some 18th c styles, so I too was left feeling that there is a bit too much of a mix of styles.
I have questions about the base, the way the jar looks inside, but most of all I find the faces of some of the Gods rather expressionless and empty which they shouldn't be.
On the plus side, it is very nicely painted and in some respects seems genuinely old but I would want an expert to reassure me about these doubts especially when so much money is involved.
Thanks for spending all day trying to find out ( : I'm wondering if they'd an enamel expect amongst us? I'm guessing famille rose came about adding the beginning of the 18th century? I'm not clued up on the evolution on famille rose enamels but would be a good thing to learn about.
Oh please don't worry, it was only this morning over breakfast. I enjoyed it, too. It was / is intriguing. Hope we find out more. You may have to ask Peter. 😊
