I’m going to just throw this out because I know a little about walnuts but they are actually quit soft when first dropped and skinned not very hard. Just a point.
Sorry, I meant "I do not see the reason for that big enthusiasm about the inscription".
I want to make clear, my interest in the plaque is NOT because I think it is a masterpiece…. I never said it, nor suggested that.
It’s a good representation of miniature calligraphy. I would have preferred one on ivory, Bakelite is just fine.
Also, the examples Giovanni have shown are superb, but that does not detract from the artistry of these early 20th c. plaques.
Comparing contemporary art with early classical art leaves many wondering how the simplistic designs of the 20th c. could even be popular, let alone achieve record breaking results at auction.
It’s just a matter of taste. I love the simplicity of these plaques, and I love the walnut and snuff bottle Giovanni has shown, but for different reasons. One can love both I think.
Thanks guys for the input and interest. I’m a little confused about the technical comments. I am a living artist I have sold paintings all over the world I have been using mixed media for most of my projects so I don’t understand a opinion on the technical aspects. I understand Tim. He is say if the artwork itself was perfect the real skill would have been missed the miniature writing. I hope this is what you are you are saying . Maybe the media used here was not for any other reason but to perform the task the artist intended writing in as small of a character as he possibly could. I know as a artist there are not many people that could achieve this and if they could it would have taken a lifetime to master. And maybe a few exists. If this level can be achieved by anyone there would be more around. And if you think you could achieve this I will be happy to agree just as soon as you complete your 900 character poem. It’s easy to be a critic not so easy to perform the task.
@lotusblack can you take a picture of the seal and the last few lines at left corner?
@yinchris thank you for your help in translation very important to this forum I thank you. Here are pictures requested. I also included a perspective picture. Of a Bic pen to demonstrate that size of the characters are the size of a ball point on the pen.
Here is a example of master calligraphy from He Xuren. One on the side of a cong. The other on a seal.
The last image is the craft/skill know as rice writing. This art is still being done today. It's extraordinary how they do it on a grain of rice.
@imperialfinegems Mark I am reading that they can write a poem on a strand of human hair. That’s something I want to see.
- @lotusblack
The words got cut it off, can you take another picture of left line middle/ top side? The picture of whole poem just too small for me to read the last part, only can do section by section. Sorry about that and thank you for being patience.
I have seen it in China, a single line of white characters written on a single human hair. It was on display under a strong magnifying lens.
I do not remember if it was in an exhibition or a museum.
Giovanni
Dear Yin Hall,
I have a Yiaqing big plate that bears a long inscription etched in the glaze. A couple of friends has not been able of translating it.
If you would be so kind to try, I will appreciate very much to be contacted at the following address. The name is theclayandbrush and the place is gmail.com
Thank you in advance
Regards
Giovanni
@yinchris here are the pictures you requested thanks again for the hard work
Hi Brian,
Here is the rest of translation:
Picture "Gui Fei Zui Jiu" - The Drunken Beauty, Qing Dynasty Beijing opera. For her:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yang_Guifei
It carved by "CHEN Qiuxiong" from a artist/craft studio in Taiwan, Taipei City.
About the year of made, I hit to a problem. It said "戊庚“ =Wugeng which Chinese does NOT have this year, the artist possibly made a mistake that it should be Gengwu, which it would be 1970, 1910, 1850.... (every 60 years.)....
Regards,
Yin
- @yinchris thank you very much so these are not Chinese plaques since they were made in Taipei right.
