Could I ask some help with the artist identification and possible translation of the inscription?

I bought this vase from the estate of an Asian antique dealer I knew for many years while learning the trade.

Jerry (my friend), lived in China during the 1960-70’s and worked as an American actor for Chinese soap operas and tv advertisements.  During that time, he accumulated literally tons of Asian art, furniture, and antiques, but his taste was all over the range with regards to quality.

Upon his return to the USA, Jerry brought back dozens of full freight containers of his ‘stuff’, and from around 1980 to 2014 (I might be off on the specific year) he ran an antique shop selling predominantly Asian antiques until he met his unfortunate demise due to an car accident caused by a drunk driver.

Jerry showed me this vase a few years prior to his passing, but didn’t want to sell it.  I was able to buy it very inexpensively because his brother who is handling the estate, has so far refused to work with me, fearful thar I might cheat him out of his best pieces. In doing so, he has been using local dealers with zero knowledge, and he has essentially full filled his own fears.

I mention the story about Jerry in part to pay homage, but also to say that I am certain this fish vase is pre-1980, not by Dang Bishan from what I can see in comparison of the mark/writing, but the quality of the rendering and porcelain is very good.

So, if anyone can provide some help with the artist identification and translation, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi Tim,

I am on my phone, a quick look it’s by Deng bishan, the reason you couldn’t match it because there is no “Deng” on this one however the characters for “bishan” are the same- after comparing with Deng bishan. Will get back to you with more info when I have my computer.

A beautiful find!

It's a poem by Libai, "Guan Yu Tan"(Watching fish)  the first 2 verses. And here is the translation by google:

Watching fish on the blue pond, Muluotan has clear water, purple scales leap at sunset, and waves grow everywhere in the garden

"Wu Chen" nian which is 1988, 1928 and....

The bottom seal is "Bishan"

Hope it helps.

Yin

@Greeno107,

It would have been quite a find if it was by the renowned artist Deng Bishan 1874-1930. His genuine works command hefty prices.

It's a attribute. The calligraphy style is wrong.

@imperialfinegems Well, it’s a long shot, but I bought it right, anyhow. I’ve noticed the script on plaques are rendered more formal than other objects.  Here is script from a brush pot sold by Christie’s in 2010 for about $150,000 USD.

1CD2CCFC BA56 4EAA 8C68 91979334B522

 Compared to mine…

You know I’m not a native reader, but they look pretty close.  Still, the seals and mark on the bottom seem a bit unusual, and brush pots would bring a premium since scholar’s objects are highly desirable.

The thickness and angle of the calligraphy is inconsistent with Deng Bishan hand when compared to known examples.

The seal/read marks are also not right.

Unfortunately there are only limited examples to go by. I have found no vases by him. That obviously doesn't mean he didn't do them. He obviously did but I couldn't find any in my reference material. Only plaques and scholars items.

The closest I found (calligraphy) to yours was water pot sold by Christies in 2006. Although signed Deng Bishan.

I am not an expert on Deng Bishan. He is the only one of the eight that I have not done in depth research on. It's all about perception when it comes to these masters. However, the read marks on your vase are not correct for him.

Copies are in some cases exceptionally well done. Even in some cases better than the masters. But they cannot replicate the hand of calligraphy correctly.

I dont think your vase is a new or modern interpretation. It looks to have some age to it.

I actually think Mark is right, because all the works I found are hand signed by "Deng bishan" not by "Bishan". Only signing the given name without family name is unusual for Chinese artist. Sorry Tim.

@yinchris, @imperialfinegems

I agree with you both... it does seem to fall a little short of Bishan's known works, but I'm glad to have bought it.  I also bought this other vase along with the 'Bishan' vase, also from my late friend's collection.  I'm not a fan of this type of military propaganda 'Cultural Revolution' style porcelains, but I know there are some collectors eager to buy stuff like this.  I plan to sell this one.

Tim,

I don't know much about this period, but I think your cultural revolutionary vase is beautifully potted. I really like the bulbous portion of the neck.

Here is the translation:

bottom: Jingdezhen art porcelain factory revolution community made

characters with people on the  banner: A thorough criticism of revisionism

inscription on the vase: read from left to right and horizontally.  Year 1967 at the bottom. Have fun!!!- from Chairman Mao red book.

All wrong thoughts, all poisonous weeds, all ghosts and monsters should be criticized, and they must not be allowed to overflow freely.

@yinchris Wow!  Thank you! Well, I'm not a collector of this type of porcelain, so I've given it to my son to put it up on his Ebay.
