Hi all,
It's been an exciting day here again. I finally got the sister pair to the late qing/early republic period vase lamp I had Peter check into a little while back, it's missing the handles but it's definitely the sister to it thanks to the owner holding onto it for me. I'll share an update about these later after I get home.
While surfing around the PA philadelphia area, I stopped into an antique mall and picked up two other objects. One is a large brass bowl i plan to research tonight and share later, and the other is a kangxi style mei ping Claire de lune monochrome color vase. It's unmarked, but its striking and has a kangxi foot. Aside from the foot, the feel of the porcelain is definitely closer to late ming period.
Is it of the period? It's a little over 4.5 inches tall or so.
Got home and did some more investigation about the vase. A few key points:
- The bottom is translucent with light shining through when under the base which is visible through the mouth.
- The inside is fully glazed, very dirty with a significant debris layer (very visible when lighted from the bottom)
- The glaze along the foot rim edge is even and cut cleanly, no pooling. There is a kiln fault or maybe an anchor support on one side of the glazed foot rim.
- I remember Peter detailing how Mei Ping style vases (when researching the black faded gilted vase a while back) from kangxi period do a fish tail fan out. It resembles the same motion and shape he described.
- The porcelain clay appears to be high quality, very clean. It's also very smooth, not coarse or grity. Some dirt/grime of course.
- There are slightly raised bumps throughout the glaze, integrated into it (ie as smooth as the glaze is).
- One side has light rougher bumps in the glaze which are not as integrated as most of the bumps. The bumps are mostly uniform sized but some varying in size throughout the vase.
Worth having Peter checkout?
I think it’s Yongzheng period better natural light photos would be nice.
@lotusblack lemme see what i can do, it's been really rainy today and yesterday so the lighting is challenging here.
I think it’s a good piece very nice monochrome.
@lotusblack very cool, ill have it checked over by Peter with the box set when they're back from vacation and drop back in with an update for it then.
I know chatgpt isn't really great at identification itself but it is helpful to understand the signs to look for from what it gathers. This wouldn't be considered an imperial piece or a commissioned piece for the court though, would it? They were usually all marked i believe, but it says otherwise for clair de lune and other special monochrome objects, or scholar/court official commissions for private use.
Did some more digging and found this excerpt on a Sotheby's article of a Yongzheng Cloissone vase to answer my own question:
The Yongzheng Emperor (r. 1723-1735) was one of the most innovative imperial art patrons. He encouraged the recreation of masterpieces of the past at the imperial workshops, as well as the creation of original contemporary designs, sometimes loosely based on earlier prototypes, that became equally influential in subsequent reigns. Many of these imperial products remained unmarked.
If its period...
Hi Preston -
Although monochromes are a very difficult subject, a rare disagreement with Brian @lotusblack …
The lack of ware, trimming of the foot and the slightly uneven, and very white, glaze to the base would indicate this is not a Yongzheng period example but much later …
From the images it does seem to exhibit some age, but I would think early 20th century at best …
However, I would certainly ask Peter for an opinion when he returns …
Stuart
@pbarski93 I'll be hoping for the best, but it will still have good value being such a great color even if it is Republic.🤞
Monochromes are very difficult to assess using pictures.
My thoughts are that this particular one is probably Republic period.
I would definitely ask Peter for his opinion.
Regardless it's a beautiful vase.
Mark
@imperialfinegems thank you Mark, it's been easier to settle on the err of caution to its age a bit now.
Although I guess the only thing left while we wait is some UV light photos. I'm not experienced anywhere near Yongzheng wares and how they should react but maybe we do here a bit.
What're your thoughts about this result?
Note, the tiny dots visible in the fluorescence on the glaze appears to be kiln ash defects upon closer inspecton, not restoration or over painting of any kind.
