Hi Everyone,
I am curious to know what you think of this gentleman who has recently joined my household. He is about 15.5" tall, has a removable head. A tomb figure, maybe Ming? This is my first Chinese clay figurine so I don't know for sure. I imagine they're difficult to date because so many of them were made over the centuries.
The green glaze has a shimmering quality to it; I'm not sure you can see that in the photos. Would this be an example of sancai (there is black, too)?
There is dirt encrusting the body - can I clean it safely?
What do you think? Do you collect them?

What a difficult area you have decided to collect in needs very special knowledge. To clean I would try a very soft brush to remove most of the dirt and maybe finish with a damp soft cloth. I like the figure he has a nice face, can't help with a date. Antiques have been a prohibited export from China since about 2009, so if your item is genuine it must of been exported prior to this date and if that is the case I would of thought it would of lost it's dirt by 2021. I really hope I am on the wrong track with my thinking and that you item proves to be the real thing. There are Ming experts here hope they log in and see your post and let us know their their thoughts It might help them if you give the dimensions and tell us a little of how and where you acquired it.

Not an expert in these but my overall impression is that upon first glance it definitely has the look of a true Ming piece. My own preference would be to not clean him as the dirt is Ming period😀. Seriously, It’s going to take an expert to authenticate him. May I ask how you acquired him? I like him, good substantial size and has an aged look.

Thanks for the link. Mine is definitely not as high a quality. From what I read, they vary widely from crude to elegant. With mine the head may not have been intended for its body.
The holes that you can see at the top of the Christies figures are the necks; these sculptures were made with the heads separately.

I found different type s online as you say vary in quality , i hope for you its real ,but you know how tricky this

Hi Michael,
I purchased it on Ebay from a seller in San Diego and said, for what it's worth, that they came from an estate sale. He has two others that I didn't think were as interesting. Here is a link to one of them.
(I'll add some photos of it as well.)
Mine was broken in half at some point and repaired, not that that means anything insofar as authenticity is concerned. I can see how these would be relatively easy to fake.

Thank you. He definitely has character and I like the shape of the head and hat; it has elegant contour lines.
The seller has been very nice to me - before this I purchased a scalloped Canton dish from him. I'll see if he has more information about the "estate sale" from whence these came.
