Described as old and not antique
What could it be?
Would you think it is an ok buy for £13 even if it is not genuine. As i think it is rather well painted
this is too damaged , imo , and difficult and not worth repairing ; i wouldn't bother with it. Can you post the link to the ebay auction ? thx. Sometimes searching for individual items or sellers there is hard and time consuming.
tam
seller says very old but no dates given (!) , and there are no pictures there of the base , so you can't make an informed judgement. Maybe ask the seller for more info before you pay...... I know it's not very good form , but in this case asking him or her why he thinks its old. , seems reasonable

Ok Thanks Tam.
I have a vase in this shape, size and possibly worse condition (came as part of a job lot). Mine is late 19th c. There are quite a few around, all with the same shape lid, it is a shame we can't see the foot rim or the underside of the lid which should be broad and unglazed - if I remember correctly, it is in a box under the bed!
I would definitely ask for his definition of very old so that you know where you stand, roughly, regards dating it.
Julia
Hi Guys,
I asked Dan and he said it was late Qing but he is a big seller so much passes through his hands. He did not say why he did not list it as Antique.
This wont go in a box under the bed 🙂
I am making baby steps in Chinese blue and white, as i prefer japanese ware but one day I got a blue and white chinese small vase and when i placed it among the Japanese ware, it simply illuminated with beauty and looked magnificent so I have a quiet and growing appreciation for Chinese blue and white.
Dear Short Dong,
I would not buy that even for one euro. Why should I spend one euro for something that goes to the garage? The garage is already full!
You must learn about Chinese ceramics, so to understand what is valuable and what isn't, what is typical of a period and what is not, what is well done or not, and so on. It is not a short path. The best suggestion, while you are at the beginning of the path, is to buy nothing.
That vase is too small for its shape, = worth nothing
Very badly decorated (horrible, indeed) = worth nothing
Very dull blue = worth nothing
On top of the three reasons above, it is damaged. What is it worth? Nothing.

I am learning Giovanni. It does have a little value for me, as I can find somewhere to place it. I was watching two other Late Qing Vases, that were of better size and i was pipped to the finish by the 'private bidder' ghost trade, I was frustrated and bought this on emotions only and was not thinking rationally.
However, I am confident when the time comes i can break even on this, and in the meantime I am happy to enjoy it even if it is not ideal.
You are correct this was bought on frustration and emotion and not rationale. Thank you for your honesty and for helping me learn and understand.
Best Regards
Short Dong
Oops! Dear Short Dong, I have not understood that you have bought this vase; I thought that you were just asking opinion. Being so, I have been a bit brutal, but I am happy that you took it the right way?.
Dear Short Dong, I think that you understand that my being so frank is because I would like that others avoid what happens to every beginner. Yes, everyone, including myself.
I have a lot of stuffs in the garage, bought when I was green, which now will stay there almost forever, because not re-sellable.
It will be a good help to keep on your computer some picture of typical Kangxi ware. Then, the next time that you will find something that seems appealing, compare the decoration with that of the Kangxi. Probably you will save money, and space in the garage.
Good luck
Giovanni
Giovanni,
Ha, Yes I bought it. There was no way around it. I always appreciate your opinions. They are efficient.
In Ireland we judge price by how many pints of pub Guinness it would cost. So it cost me only 3 pints of Pub Guinness. So while I will miss my 3 pints of Guinness, i can struggle to live with my decision.
I have a real Kangxi plate in front me 🙂 but this is the kind of plate I would also like.
Numismarts is selling it. However unless i am going on a serious bender, i am afraid i wont be able to afford it just yet.
I would love to get this plate 🙂
It has a kind of medical and biological aesthetic, like the Chinese had already sussed out the Chemical and Chromosome of Conception on a microscopic level.
Brand new and damaged. Worthless I feel. Soz.
