I had this for a couple of months just hanging out on my book shelf. What do y'all think of this. It's either made out of bamboo or some type of wood. It's intricately carved with a bird resting on a branch surrounded by flowers. In my opinion who ever did it spent a lot of time carving this figure

Hi Reeves,

The style looks like rhino horn to me. I have no idea as to the authenticity. Will have to wait for a wiser man/woman....

That's what I thought at first, it reminded me of a Libation cup. I've never have held rhino horn. So not quite sure on how it should feel.   But I'm thinking its bamboo

12.1 oz, is that very light? An old piece of bamboo is pretty light. I mistook one for balsa wood, before I knew better. Doesn’t really look like bamboo to me, but I could easily be wrong.

It's under a pound. I think the weight is proportionate with the size.

Hi Reeves,

Your item is not bamboo. Neither is it rhino horn. Below is an example of the base on bamboo.

It's nicely carved and appears to have some age to it. So perhaps early 20th century. I am unable to identify the species of wood by way of your pictures as I am currently using a phone screen.

Perhaps @Brettm can help if he logs on.

Okay I thought it was bamboo, because it dosen't feel as dense as wood.   What type of wood it possibly be.

@reeves

Here is my bamboo vase from 1991, the base was painted black but these are some shots of the grain on bamboo (exterior shot of grain) and when it is hollowed out.  I suppose you could stain bamboo to match the color of boxwood.  How much does boxwood weigh?  With relief carving perhaps it  would not weigh very much, depending on size of the piece.  This vase of mine is very light weight and it has had plenty of time to dry out.

Hello Reeves,

First of all I like your carving it has a good overall shape and a harmonious design and feel. As pointed out by Mark the carving is not a bamboo stem carving but it could be a bamboo root carving. Bamboo being a grass it is not technically a timber it can however resemble timber and most people are happy to include it as wood or timber carving. The reason I say it is not a stem carving is that being a grass bamboo stems have three layers a hard outer layer, a soft and very porous center and a harder inner layer. This can be seen very clearly in the excellent 2nd photo provided by Sharon. Your carving having being very deeply carved in 3d so to speak if carved from a stem would reveal this pithy core and have a very different appearance.  Bamboo root is very different much more dense and solid, and quite difficult to distinguish from tree wood especially from photographs. I can't tell from your photo's if the item is carved from a solid piece of materially or separate pieces and then joined together.  They are very clever and highly skilled at doing this you need a strong glass to look really close at the item. I have had an experience of having  carving that for all the world looked like one solid piece until a very hot spell of weather and due to shrinkage it revealed it was made from 3 pieces of timber. Assuming your item is bamboo root and is carved from a solid block I thing it has some age late 19th or early 20thc it certainly seems to be above the standard tourist type of thing. Of course having it in your hand is the only way to be definite. In one of Peter's recent video's he talks about the weight of bamboo carvings and how light they can feel due to moisture loss over time. I would not worry about the weight of your item it seems in proportion to it's size. I don't see why you should not refer to it as a libation cup. The term libation referrer's to an items use not the materially it is made from. Sorry to have written so much and not really answered your questions maybe with better photo's it maybe be possible to be more definite. If you manage to take better pic's showing any areas where you can the grain plus more details of the birds it maybe worth asking Peter to have a look it is only a small investment $12.00 I think he has a very good knowledge of wood carving and from his video's I get the impression it is a area of great interest to him. I must say based on the photo's I think this item has the potential to be considered a very good item the carving of the central lotus flower is nicely undercut to give it a good life like appearance.  If it is carved from the solid it would of taken great skill and fairy fingers one slip with the knife or chisel and the whole thing would be ruined.

Cheers

Michael

@brettm

Thank you for your detailed review of the item, and believe you've answered a lot of my questions.  From what I can tell it looks like its been carved from one piece, Unfortunately I don't have a loup to look at it under magnification, since my daughter is at that age to where she wants to hide everything.  I did notice one of the Lotus flowers was damaged and repaired. Ive been using my phone to take the photos, so ill take some better photos later on today with my Camera and with a different background, hopefully ill be able to get more detailed photos.  Ill also be submitting some photos to Peter, I didn't realize he had a paid service to where I could get a evaluation from him. Thankyou to everyone who has taken the time to share thoughts, opinions and knowledge with me.

Pages 184-198 of the first Bonhams catalogues on the Reference section top shelf has examples of bamboo, zitan, rootwood and boxwood carvings, you can enlarge the view of these different carvings, not sure that it will give you a definitive answer but you may enjoy taking a look.  Sharon

Hi Reeves,

Based on your latest pictures it would appear that your item is indeed imo bamboo root. Just my thoughts.
