I've bought this strange carp snuff glass painted snuff bottle. It looks very fine at only 7cm. Its in the post so much don't have it yet, but it has a 4 character qianlong mark, not shown in the photos. I've seen some others with a similar motif but no way near as fine. I'm assuming this has been carved not cast?
@greeno107 hi Tim, yes aware the c18 examples are more elegant, but I doubt it's new. It only cost me 100 minus commission for the seller. A lot of work has gone into it. The carving and the detail on the fins and scales is very fine. Not to mention the carving
Perhaps the word 'modern' is more appropriate, than 'new'.

@greeno107 hi Tim, yes I saw that one alse, there are many others but they are not really comparable imo. The example you've posted isn't carved...
The stopper (coral) looks like, but I suppose it could be from another bottle
There's a great snuff bottle forum you can post to if you would like a more qualified evaluation than my own. I've dealt with them a number of times over the years. Good luck.
@greeno107 the asking price for the snuff bottle you posted is 4300 dollars. And it states modern...
I was simply pointing out that the style and manner of your snuff is modern... certainly after 1980, and most likely made within the last decade.
Yes, there are modern snuff bottles that demand high prices... Bonham's does a sale about once a year for late 20th c. (possibly 21st c, too) snuffs. However, the pieces that achieve anywhere near the $4-5k range are signed by reknown artists, and are quite fantastic - most are inside painted.
The prices on the website I linked you to are gallery prices, they are lofty to say the least, and given the lack of real quality, I doubt any serious snuff collector would give any consideration to paying $43 for that snuff, let alone $4300.
I'm using kid's gloves with you, Thomas, because you seem to feel I have some agenda against you. Nothing can be further from the case. I would like for everyone who participates in this Forum to achieve success in buying high quality and period made Asian works of art, and if you read my posts, you will see that in one I am highly critical of one piece, and in the next, highly comlementative... I do not hold back punches or praises, because honesty is how we all learn and improve.
However, you seem to be missing the mark on spotting quality and age, and when pointed out, you close your mind, cling to very thin connections to much rarer/earlier pieces, and get very defensive. This approach will not help you make better purchases in the future, but instead will cause you to repeat the same mistakes.
As I've made it very clear, I feel there are two basic reasons why people post to this Forum - evaluation or affirmation.
If you are posting with a genuine desire for evaluation, then as an inexperienced buyer of Asian antiques, you should be prepared for a lot of negative, but hopefully constructive criticism. But, if your reaction to this crticism is to suggest that we are, or perhaps more accurately that I am a mean spirited person who is needlessly nitpicking, and is otherwise unfounded in my assessments, again... I think you're wrong to feel that way.
If you are simply posting for affirmation, and you just want to share your latest purchase, perhaps you need to change the catagory that you are posting from 'help identify this' to 'share your favorite thing', and then I'll just applaud your most recent acquisition, and enjoy it for what it is.
Hi Tim, it's easy to misinterpret text messages and written messages, especially if you have never spoken to the person in real life. I'm not annoyed or anything regarding the links you've sent. I was just surprised to see such a high price in a modern snuff bottle. However Its quite different from the one I have. I'm not saying it's c18 but I wouldn't be surprised if it is Republic. We'll have to wait until I have it and can look at it in real life.
I have been grateful for you knowledge in the past, especially regarding the Republic faux Bois brush pot.
Its cool looking, but I also suspect this is a more modern bottle. The enamels don't look republic imo.
I remember that Faux Bois piece Thomas, what happened to it?
@thomasumjohnson I remember your brushpot - congrats, again!
The snuff is not of the same quality as your brush pot, sorry to say. Please, check with the snuff bottle forum... they live, eat, sleep snuffs... they're firendly, highly reliable and free.
Some of the members personally know the snuff bottle makers in China going back to the 1980's. You'll get a very informed answer to your question on age and quality. Good luck!
